Jo Cox was murdered 4 years ago whilst she was about to start her constituency surgery. She died in public service. In the Chamber today, we were reminded of the wisdom in her message; the responsibility of all of us to spread compassion and understanding over bigotry and hate.

33 years ago today, a historic General Election took place in which Diane Abbott, Paul Boateng and Bernie Grant were elected the UK's first black MPs, representing the constituencies of Hackney North and Stoke Newington, Brent South, and Tottenham. @HackneyAbbott @BGArtsCentre

On this day in 1987, after years of racist media vilification Bernie Grant was elected to Parliament. He’d become - and remained - a lightening rod for the pent up anger of black & brown people in our inner cities - and across the diaspora.

We are pleased the House stands in solidarity with #blacklivesmatter - we will continue pressing for the elimination of racism and discrimination across the world and at UK Parliament.
