After 15 years, I pastor a church with 75 members with an annual budget of $103,000. Pastors, let no one measure the significance of your ministry based on the amount of people and money in your church.

I encourage pastors to keep track of how many hours they work in a week. We are available 24/7. We don’t punch a clock. But I am convinced the only way to determine a healthy rhythm and balance of life and ministry is to be aware how much we work. And Sunday is a work day.

Never underestimate the powerful ministry of presence. Pastors worry too much about having the right words to say. Instead of seeing the best way to care for a hurting person might be to simply sit, be still with them, and listen.

Pastors, it’s Monday. Don’t resign. Instead… 1) Drink some good coffee. 2) Lift something heavy. 3) Pray honestly. 4) Be Still and Silent. 5) Sit with a safe friend. Bivocational pastors at your other job, apply these in your short breaks and lunch hour.

We have had a great couple of days serving pastors in the Salt Lake City, Utah area. Some faithful pastors are serving here under some really challenging circumstances. Recent research shows Utah as the least church state in the U.S. Keep praying for these faithful men!

Off to Utah with my good friend Michael West for a full weekend of ministry with pastors there. Michael is a pastor who has been going to Utah for 25 years to do ministry there and is dragging me along this time. We would welcome your prayers.

There exists an amazing irony with pastors and their ministry. Pastors often exhaust themselves doing many things that have nothing to do with their central call and task of “Shepherding the Flock” (1 Peter 5:1-4; Acts 20:28; Heb. 13:17)

Bittersweet day yesterday at @SBTSrevitalize as we hosted the last meeting with our 25-26 interns (culminating our first 10 years as a Center) and introduced our 26-27 cohort to one another in preparation for this fall.

There is an incredible irony in the ministry. Pastors give their lives for the care of other people’s souls…at the expense of their own soul. Pastors, make sure you are caring for your own soul so you have something to pour out when you care for others in your ministry.

We had a great pastor’s event at Grace Baptist Church in Somerset, Kentucky yesterday. A room full of faithful and eager pastors with a desire to learn and grow. Thanks for praying. I head to Utah this weekend to do another one.

When pastors experience a really hard ministry place, they are tempted to panic and conclude something is wrong because they are surprised by how difficult it is. What if the difficulty is a sign you are exactly where God wants you and that you are doing something right?

Looking forward to the pastor’s event at Grace Baptist Church in Somerset Kentucky today on trying to find a balanced and healthy ministry life. Pray for the pastors who will sit here on a Monday that is commonly a discouraging day.
