@TweetAtAKK I use all three ~daily, especially when doing hands-on work. Embedded platforms are still really fragmented and have an OS they work best on .. many VMs in my life .. including four Ubuntu’s b/c only one exact version supported 🤯

TIL about the Windows Linux Subsystem--fascinating and useful stuff! I remember dual boot chores from back when I was in college. Microsoft has changed so much. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_S… But what OS is common among faculty? 🤔 Poll time! All faculty: What OS do you use regularly?

@TweetAtAKK Very different growth curves however. LA set on path to the 2nd largest US city early 1900s when the west was becoming a thing and the quake scared folks away from SF — took longer for SD to grow appreciably IIUC (now feeling urge to overlay time x pop graph to check self tho..)

@PatPannuto Hmm. But LA is similar in age to SD. Both were est. in last quarter of 1700s and incorp. as cities only in 1850s. 🤔 BTW USD is indeed R2 but not R1. Seattle also has NW and SPU but neither are even R2. All 3 are also Christian churches-affiliated, not secular schools.

Looking at the landscape of major research universities (R1) in the USA, I am curious why San Diego and Seattle in particular have no private ones to compete with the public ones. All other big cities have both: NYC, LA, Bay Area, Chicago, Atlanta, Houston, etc. 🤔 #AcademicLife

@TweetAtAKK @ioanapatrin Hah, quite probably — this just names the who, where, and how it went down in San Diego specifically :)

@ioanapatrin @PatPannuto Interesting, thanks for the pointer! Will check it out. But prima facie, this list in the summary: "municipal corruption, virulent antiunionism, political repression, and racial injustice" applies to the history of literally every big city in the US, right? 😄

@TweetAtAKK I’ve started reading thenewpress.com/books/under-pe… recently. It gives a really interesting (if opinionated) view into the history of SD and how things came to be as they are—I recommend if you’re civically interested

@TweetAtAKK We do have USD :) More seriously, I am always surprised to remember how young San Diego is as a city. It isn’t more than maybe 30y that it would lump in in a list of large cities like that. Not much of a window to create it yet; nor higher ed a power broker priority consistently

@paul_pearce @avinashkunnath Counterpoint: There is a threshold where athletics serves the academic mission purely by increasing name recognition. IIUC, a primary reason that UCSD went D1 was to leverage athletics to increase the visibility of the university as a whole. Happened b/c of academic senate vote

@avinashkunnath I am a faculty member elsewhere that went to every Cal home game during BS MS PhD (even ran the flags once). I can count the faculty I've met *anywhere* that care about athletics on one hand. It's just not on people's radar. Unless it's a Thursday game and boots them from parking

The problem is the faculty at Berkeley do not want their power siphoned off the way it's happened elsewhere, even if it's proven to be a major lift academically to have good athletics. Also the high cost of living really reduces college town camaraderie. Many faculty commute.
Mighty Golden Bears@cal_alumna

@avinashkunnath I have thought about this. IDK if the answer is for fans to pull away. Someone needs to sell more faculty on athletics. IDK how but you are prolly up to the challenge. You could start by inviting them to tailgates & incorporating their academic disciplines into fight songs.

@joepolitz @Catnaplover @sdmts +1 for transit app – the Go feature is also brilliant as it supplements data from MTS's feeds with live GPS reports of users physically on the bus/tram. I try to use Go regularly even when I don't need it as Transit has an internal AI model of actual performance; works quite well

San Diego folks — where do you get live updates about the @sdmts blue line? It’s currently 20 min late, running into the next departure time, but the Pronto app and the screens here are just chugging along on the official schedule.

@schemeprincess By the end of grad school, @naklugman @Josh__Adkins and I were doing the real science: blind taste testing with the whole fifth floor of Cory 😄 (Also featured: homemade limoncello from Branden — though I think that was probably too sweet for the current call)

@schemeprincess Tonic! (Sans gin) It’s quite a bit of fun to make your own tonic syrup, and there’s an enormous range of botanicals and flavors you can mess with. This was my gateway recipe: pinchandswirl.com/homemade-tonic… — 100% on cold extract > the many recipes that cook the syrup to do in one day

Tweeps: what are good non-alcoholic drinks? I want to drink something other than flavored sparkling warmer but I don’t like drinks that are too sweet and prefer bitter drinks. This is apparently really hard to find in non-alcoholic form!

.@sdmts but actually — people are running between cars to find doors they can get into before the train departs. What is the plan to handle the load when @UCSanDiego starts in three weeks?

.@sdmts what barriers remain for 7.5m morning headways on the rest of the blue line? @UCSanDiego starts in full in a month and it’s already get-real-close-with-your-neighbor SRO between non-ugrad UCSD folk, @PreussUCSD students, and @VASanDiego heading north every morning.

I give up, HN needs an actual specific “no quoting the Unabomber” guideline. No beating around the bush on it.
