I find it quite offensive that in a country like India, a few labor unions and farmers groups can hold the progress of a country hostage. An increase of 1% in GDP growth leads to a roughly 0.2% - 0.5% decrease in metrics like infant mortality, maternal mortality, child mortality and so on. Indira Gandhi's greatest crime wasn't the Emergency, but her socialism. The socialist policies promulgated by her have reduced GDP growth by at least 2-3% over the last 5 decades. The current Modi-led government is still running into obstacles trying to repeal the labor law restrictions that she brought into force. In 2009, Swaminathan estimated that had these policies not been in force, another 15 million children could have been alive. 17 years later, how many more children have died just because socialist policies have retarded growth? Farmer groups are the culprit too. Decades of urea, water, electricity and countless other subsidies later have turned farmers into rent seeking groups that ferociously oppose any modernization. The Iran war is simply the crows coming home to roost. Urea subsidy will become back breaking. And now more children, infants and mothers will die than otherwise. Farmers are also depleting ground water at alarming rates. Punjab is already in shaky territory. Maharashtra isn't far behind. Unless this curse of MSP is lifted, the environment is going to be destroyed. In short, farmers and labor unions are going to sink the Indian economy, if not tackled.
