Vic Gov has announced the continuation and expansion of a policy that allows the killing of native dingoes in Victoria, ignoring the wishes and lore of Traditional Custodians and advice from scientists. @LandEthics Sounds like an interesting conference, Steve. Yes, IPLCs are not monolithic so I am sure responses will vary. Hard to add nuance with limited characters but my experience with IPs in SE Australia is that they prefer not to use the term

@PatrickGiumelli Agreed, though interesting to note that it seems to depend on the individual or IPLCs in question. We’ve heard some indigenous people using the word here at #WILD12 so perhaps context specific.

Seen an increase in the use of rewilding in place of translocation or reintroduction. Rewilding is place based and translocation ≠ rewilding as it can be used for purposes other than rewilding (assisted colonisation, species conservation). Don’t add to confusion around rewilding

@LandEthics My QT was in response to the increasing trend for people to say they are ‘rewilding [insert species]’ or they will ‘rewild [insert species]’. Agree that translocation can be a key component of rewilding. But merely translocating a species is not, in my opinion, rewilding

@PatrickGiumelli Translocation can be a key component of rewilding. See Principle 1 wherein “Where appropriate, strongly interacting keystone species that have roles in maintaining the ecosystem should be reintroduced or depleted populations reinforced to an ecologically effective level.”
