After 62 years, it lives! Attenborough’s long-beaked echidna, one of the world’s rarest mammals, has been rediscovered in New Guinea. Guided by Indigenous knowledge, researchers captured it using camera traps. nature.com/articles/s4418…

Hope walks on four legs. Even before the Delhi-Dehradun expressway opens, elephants are already using the world’s largest wildlife underpass in Rajaji Tiger Reserve. A powerful example of how smart, sensitive infrastructure can work with nature. #Coexistence #WildlifeCorridors #Rajaji #GreenInfrastructure @moefcc @NHAI_Official @wii_india @ntca_india @IBCA_official @GobindsagarBha1 @rameshpandeyifs @SPYadavIFS @vrtiwari1 @Saket_Badola @samirsinha69 @bhlab_india @bahardutt @WWFINDIA @TOIIndiaNews

Caring for Country is key to a thriving future. 🌱 The Govt has made commitments to support Indigenous-led land & sea management. Some are on track. Others aren’t. Here’s how five of them are tracking—and why it matters: 👉 wwf.org.au/blogs/5-commit…

💔 Ever seen a purple-crowned fairy-wren? You might not get the chance. A WWF-Australia and @Deakin report shows that at 2°C of warming, this tiny bird could lose most of its habitat. But holding warming to 1.5°C could save over half of it…

Vic Gov has announced the continuation and expansion of a policy that allows the killing of native dingoes in Victoria, ignoring the wishes and lore of Traditional Custodians and advice from scientists. Taungurung Traditional Custodian Matthew Shanks said: “Yirrangan (dingoes) are important to maintain balance on Country through their role as an apex predator and cultural entity, providing overall management of other plant and animal species across landscapes.”

Field peeps. Best way to electronically record and look up/query trapping data on individual animals, including microchip numbers on recaptured animals? Ideally it'd work on a mobile phone. Thanks!

Indigenous peoples play an essential role in safeguarding #nature – but are often denied involvement in key decisions. 👆 It’s vital we help uphold their rights, respect their knowledge and appropriately support them to preserve their territories of life. #WWFUntangled

No one could seriously argue that this is rewilding and yet, by replacing the words translocation or reintroduction with rewilding, the public could assume that this is another rewilding project. Language matters.

@LandEthics Sounds like an interesting conference, Steve. Yes, IPLCs are not monolithic so I am sure responses will vary. Hard to add nuance with limited characters but my experience with IPs in SE Australia is that they prefer not to use the term

@PatrickGiumelli Agreed, though interesting to note that it seems to depend on the individual or IPLCs in question. We’ve heard some indigenous people using the word here at #WILD12 so perhaps context specific.

@LandEthics My QT was in response to the increasing trend for people to say they are ‘rewilding [insert species]’ or they will ‘rewild [insert species]’. Agree that translocation can be a key component of rewilding. But merely translocating a species is not, in my opinion, rewilding

@PatrickGiumelli Translocation can be a key component of rewilding. See Principle 1 wherein “Where appropriate, strongly interacting keystone species that have roles in maintaining the ecosystem should be reintroduced or depleted populations reinforced to an ecologically effective level.”
