One of the NFL’s funniest traditions is a new coach taking over a team and removing the fun from the locker room or facility.
I found 20 reported fun-removal cases since 2001.
Offseason: 8 of 9 teams improved, going from a combined 49-96 the previous season to 74-71.
In-season: 5 improved, 4 declined, 1 stayed even.
The lesson: If you’re a new coach, take away the ping-pong table. If you’re 3-5 in November, removing the distractions may just be another distraction.

According to @TheAthleticNFL staff, DT Daron Payne is the #Commanders' top breakout candidate for the 2026 season. If Payne has a breakout year, it could be huge for this unit. In my eyes, the argument hinges on Washington's line depth. Having guys like Tim Settle Jr. and Jer'Zhan Newton in the mix to help with the DT duties is nice as it frees up Payne to move around, play aggressively, and wreck game plans. If Daronte Jones is able to scheme Payne out of double teams, I'm looking for him to make a big impact on this defense. Article linked 👇 | #RaiseHail

Per @SethWickersham: When Bill Belichick and the Patriots divorced in 2024, Sean Payton considered presenting Broncos owner Greg Penner a proposal for the ages: Hire Belichick as head coach until he reached 15 wins, enough to break Don Shula's career record of 347. Payton would temporarily step down to assistant head coach and run the offense, then move back after Belichick became the all-time leader. In the end, it was too complicated -- and maybe too fanciful.

@TrevorWinstral It's the latter. The model estimates the likelihood of each personnel grouping for a given play, and I calculate the Shannon entropy from those predicted probabilities.

@PattonAnalytics Quick question, here do you look at the entropy for a given grouping of states (i.e. bucket by down, distance, etc) or do you calculate the expected distribution of personnel, then take the realized usage over expected, then calculate entropy? Unsure how you'd calc entropy here

It can be misleading to measure personnel diversity without accounting for game state.

This tweet from Tej helps show the value of personnel diversity within games. Here is a look at offensive personnel diversity across the full 2025 NFL season using normalized Shannon’s entropy. The Chargers should see a major jump after bringing in Mike McDaniel, whose Dolphins led the league in offensive personnel diversity last season.
