@NicolasDVillar1 @ianpaulwright Interpellate in French means an action of police detention. That is Althussers explicit example. Subject is a category of feudal and later French bourgeois law. The bourgeois form arises from commodity relations not police action.

@PaulCockshott @ianpaulwright Your notion that by interpellation Althusser simply means "arresting" per his example of this police, is incompatible with Althusser from the very beginning saying "ideology interpellates us as subject" and then clarifying that ideology is what constitutes us as subjects.

@NicolasDVillar1 @ianpaulwright I had Brewster himself trying to explain it to our group back in 71 and did the obligatory reading of Saussure, but we were young and naive then not having read Pashukanis so I had no basis to criticise it from.

@ianpaulwright @PaulCockshott Your misunderstanding of the althusserian notion of the subject isn't because of translation, its because you never bothered to understand structuralism and the idea of the semiotic or semantic field which is the foundation for everything Althusser and Lacan say wrt the subject.

The Ancient Egyptians invented it before any other civilisation really existed. The Ancient Greek, Romans and Arabic cultures all decided to simply copy it rather than change it. If it had been more modern and not 5,500 years old we probably would have had other variations.
Romy@Romy_Holland

it’s weird that every culture uses the same timekeeping. i know there have been other calendar systems, but everyone settled on 24 hour days and 60 minute hours and 60 second minutes. these are weird numbers! why didn’t anyone implement metric timekeeping?

El objetivo era desviar la atención de la fábrica (donde se produce el valor y ocurre la explotación) hacia el mercado (donde los individuos parecen "libres e iguales" al elegir productos). 4/12

@die_rizzen But Marx was wrong to make it an interior psychological property of humans. Architects are a result of the social division of labour and need tools like rulers and compasses.

@cabalaofpegasus No. Animals dont have artistic sensibilities and techniques are biologically determined. Now, there is purpose in what animals do, i am a teleologist here. But its not properly conscious/self-conscious.

@die_rizzen No it is very relevant. Bricklayers do not raise the building in their imagination and architects don't raise it. What is human is the ability to draw and follow exterior plans. Bees don't draw. The only plans they transmit are by dance.

@OmarMontoyaSua1 I think you are doing something all too common, equating value with the form of expression of value: exchange value. Even the latter is not specifically capitalist, existed in slave economy too.

@OmarMontoyaSua1 In slavery exchange was a prerequisite to buy slaves on the market. Hence the highly developed money and trade in Roman times.

@OmarMontoyaSua1 No. Past economies also economised on social Labour, read chapters on slave and feudal agriculture in my book How the World Works.

The Green party had a socialist/pro-Palestine stance. Polanski, a liberal Zionist Jew, infiltrated the party on a mission to destroy it, and the socialist/ anti-Zionist movement, from the inside. To turn it into an unelectable laughing stock. A strawman party, easily blown away.

Utilities can easily be Nationalised. Price cap them all and they will go bankrupt or become almost worthless. Then renationalise Energy, Water, Rail, Mail and Telecoms that were all built by the Government or with Public Funding anyway.

1/ Thought experiment doing the rounds in my head this morning. Burnham replaces Starmer. He walks into Number 10 with the Manchester accent and the real Labour framing. He announces the renationalisation of water, energy, rail, and grid. All of it. Funded by, well, vibes mostly. Here’s how the next twelve months actually play out. 👇🧵

@Eggplant_Elon Under a single nationalised industry electricity was sold at average not marginal cost. Average cost is lower and relatively insensitive to gas price compared to marginal cost.

9/ Energy bills were supposed to fall under public ownership. They rise instead, because the wholesale gas market is profoundly indifferent to ideology, and the hedging desks that used to manage that exposure have been gutted during transition. Burnham announces a price cap below cost. The Treasury absorbs the difference, so the deficit projection goes vertical.

@Onmeed 1970s Britain owned its water, transport, mail, energy, millions of council houses and sat on a huge North Sea reserve. The national debt was £80bn. 2026 Britain has no assets & a national debt of £2.9tn. It wasn't socialism that did this. It was neoliberalism.
