That’s not how understanding the future works yall.

In any hardtech startup there is a singular discipline that ties the tech to the economics and it’s vital a founding team has that as a core competency.
In geothermal, it’s Reservoir Engineering, and there are countless startups working on bad ideas because they lack that skill.

And the numbers of rejections just go up the more success people find! Because more funding rounds always mean way more rejections than people who haven’t been in the Founder seat realize.

It takes a pretty unique personality to make it as a hardtech founder. Most everyone I know who has found success has been rejected by many hundreds of VCs while fundraising over the years and still finds grit to move forward.

I hear all the time "solar + 4 hour BESS is $x/MWh" so it will win the day.
But the grid is a dynamic system, and addition of some BESS makes other resources comparatively more valuable.
True 24/7 capacity will always have additional value.

One of the reasons LCOS (and it's cousin LCOE) are flawed metrics.
The value of storage is very dependent on how much other storage is already on the grid. Shorter duration storage is very exposed.
This is one reason why the grid has and always will be a mix of resources.

Here are technologies I saw develop over time. - Cell phones. The first ones were in bags. - Laptop computers. The first one I carried around weighed 28 lb. - Microwave ovens. The first one I bought cost about a week’s salary and had a windup timer as it’s only control. - Electric car windows. The early ones were expensive and had short lives. I avoided them but now crank windows are gone. - Solar photovoltaic panels. They went from laboratory curiosity to utility solar farm size. The future is not like the past.

“They already tried that 40 years ago!” isn’t the gotcha that critics always think it is.
Lots of things change in 40 years. All new technology is too expensive until it’s not.
Very few critical innovations are “novel”, they are just ideas whose time has come.
