I was very proud to unveil a plaque at the Falls Road Library marking the 90th anniversary of the start of the Spanish Civil War. This plaque honours the ten men from the Falls who volunteered with the International Brigades, four of whom lost their lives in Spain. Alongside the plaque in Shankill Road Library, it reminds us that this was a shared act of solidarity across communities - ordinary working-class people standing against fascism and in defence of democracy. It is so important that young people learn this history and understand the values of courage, solidarity and anti-fascism that still matter deeply today. We remember them with pride.

The past shaped my path in ways I couldn’t ignore. My granda, Paddy Butler, was killed by the British Army and wrongly labelled a gunman. I refused to let that version of history stand. I helped clear his name, correct the record, and ensure the truth was finally acknowledged. Today, I use that experience to advocate for others facing injustice. Tomorrow, I will take it further—studying law and working to support those still fighting for truth and recognition. Correcting the past. Defending the present. Pursuing justice for the future.

The biggest event to ever come to Belfast is on its way this August and will be back again next year too. Bring it on! 🪕

Incredible community solidarity in West Belfast this morning.

My final full meeting as Deputy Mayor before the handover next month ended with me putting forward an important amendment to strengthen the response to scramblers, e-scooters and dangerous anti-social vehicle use. After the shocking scenes in West Belfast last night, the need for urgent action could not be clearer. The Executive must step up now with the powers, resources and support needed to protect communities and invest in preventative programmes that work. We must keep going.

Absolutely disgraceful scenes on the Stewartstown Road tonight. Someone could have been killed here tonight with these thugs. People are wreaking havoc in this community, putting residents, pedestrians and road users at serious risk. It is totally unacceptable. Police needed to act immediately and end this. Should never have got to this in the first place as it was widely spread on social media. Shocking!

A big shout out to everyone running the Belfast Marathon today. I know people personally taking part after overcoming a lot in their lives, others running with friends and work colleagues, and many raising vital funds for fantastic causes across our communities. The families and supporters of five people killed in Springhill, west Belfast, in a shooting involving the British Army in July 1972 have arrived at Belfast Coroner’s Court to hear the findings following an inquest into the incident.

Proud to walk to court with the Springhill/Westrock Massacre families this morning. For 54 years, they have carried the pain of loss and the burden of fighting for the truth about their loved ones, who were murdered by the British Army on the streets of West Belfast.
