@arthistorynews If we have to do it (and I can see which way the wind is blowing), I recommend a scheme where any UK resident need only apply for a "museum pass" granting free entry to all national museums and costing nothing. Those who don't bother have to queue/pay like tourists. Speeds queues

Yes. Even if entry remains free for UK citizens, the charging infrastructure will still put people off. What retailers call 'threshold resistance'.
kazbel@kazbel

@arthistorynews I gained a love of art and interest in art history because museums and galleries were free and I could go there as a child with my working-class parents, who also loved art. I fear that any charges will end by restricting artistic heritage to a wealthier and posher elite.

@arthistorynews But also, who counts as a ‘visitor’? Anyone without British passport? What if they live in the UK, or, eg, are studying here for a year or more? Are they to be regarded as equivalent to tourists etc? And is all of this partly about leveraging in ID cards for the rest of us?

One additional element to the ‘how’ in all this - how in practice do you get foreigners to pay but not citizens and residents - is that it risks making our national museums pivot towards serving an overseas audience, because they will be the ones who pay.

Buried in here is an end to universal free entry for museums, charging ‘international visitors’. That presumably means ID checks for everyone else. Quite a moment for Labour, who introduced free entry in 2001.

🚨 The European dream still on? 👀 UEFA have confirmed that the team finishing 7th in the Premier League this season could qualify for the 2026–27 Champions League if: 🔸 Aston Villa win the Europa League and finish 5th or 6th in the Premier League 🔸 Liverpool win the Champions League and finish 5th or 6th in the Premier League. 🔶 Meaning 10th could be enough for conference league European football this year… #BHAFC

If you want to know what Nelson thought of Muslims, you may want to factor in Nelson's column. See that thing on his hat? It is a 'chelengk'. Nelson was the first non-Muslim to be awarded one - as thanks for his victory in the Battle of the Nile. It was gifted to him by Sultan Selim III, who was literally the Caliph at the time. Nelson was so proud of it, as well as wearing it on his hat, he added it to his coat of arms. It is now the literal highest point of Nelson's column - a gift from the leader of the Muslim world to a devout Christian.

What we witnessed in London at the historic Trafalgar Square, in a country built on Judeo-Christian values, was a group of people attempting dominance over our capital city and our culture. We are not going to surrender everything that was built over centuries and defended at great cost in two world wars for us to be a free, independent nation. The British people will not put up with this any longer — simple as.

@BrightonBuzzz Only makes sense if all players are on the same level in terms of what they bring to the team. If so, select on training intensity. If not, unless they’ve actually f*cked up, then select in terms of who will bring the best chance of 3 points

🚨 Fabian Hurzeler reveals that Albion teen Charalampos Kostoulas was left out of a matchday squad because other players worked better than him in training. 🇬🇷❌ Fabian Hurzeler states: “It was not a decision against Babis, it was a decision for the other players and tomorrow there will be a new opportunity for him to get into the squad and show that he learned from the things that happened before Arsenal.” “I think it's important that we have a clear culture here and everyone has to drive this culture and therefore there are certain moments where we need to give the players an understanding of what I demand from them, of what I want to see from them in every training session." “Especially when we have like that high availability." “Everyone has to train every day on his highest level. “There were one or two players in the last week who just trained better than him before the game against Arsenal. “Therefore, I stick to my principle, I stick to the culture because, long term, the culture always wins. You want the NATO allies to join you in a war you started without ever consulting these allies about the war or explaining your war aims. We’re meant just to meekly fall in line. You recently supported a US invasion of a NATO ally (Denmark/Greenland) but now you want these same allies to join your war. Your president disparaged and misrepresented the role of NATO allies in Afghanistan. But now you want them to join with you again in a war of your making. You went to war with Iran without a thought of how to keep the Strait of Hormuz open and without involving your allies in the matter. But now you want the NATO allies to bail you out, even though there’s still no plan for Hormuz. You want the NATO allies to join you in a war in which you still cannot articulate the endgame. Or what victory would look like. You went to war thinking the Iranian regime would quickly topple, that Tehran would not attack the Gulf States or close Hormuz. Why would we align with such Epic Stupidity? You and other know-nothing blowhards started this war all on your own. You can finish it on your own. If you’re able to …
Lindsey Graham@LindseyGrahamSC

Just spoke to @POTUS about our European allies’ unwillingness to provide assets to keep the Strait of Hormuz functioning, which benefits Europe far more than America. I have never heard him so angry in my life. I share that anger given what’s at stake. The arrogance of our allies to suggest that Iran with a nuclear weapon is of little concern and that military action to stop the ayatollah from acquiring a nuclear bomb is our problem not theirs is beyond offensive. The European approach to containing the ayatollah’s nuclear ambitions have proven to be a miserable failure. The repercussions of providing little assistance to keep the Strait of Hormuz functioning are going to be wide and deep for Europe and America. I consider myself very forward-leaning on supporting alliances, however at a time of real testing like this, it makes me second guess the value of these alliances. I am certain I am not the only senator who feels this way.

British blokes…. I’ve purchased several “tins” of Heinz (British) beans because the idea of beans on toast intrigues me. I eagerly anticipate a tasting. Other than toasting bread and heating beans… Are there any other steps/ingredients?

👮‍♂️ Sunday Street Gigs! We learnt the hard way via the police that Kingston is a non starter these days, along with Camden. Where in London/Greater London should we try next? Honestly if we can’t get away with it on land anymore we might have to take to the water next! ⛴️

Walk under the Thames like it’s 1902. The Greenwich Foot Tunnel is one of London’s most underrated crossings: a 1,215-ft / 370-m cast-iron tube lined with around 200,000 white tiles, running beneath the River Thames between Greenwich (by the Cutty Sark) and Island Gardens on the Isle of Dogs. The London County Council built it as a free, all-weather route so workers living south of the river could reach the docks and shipyards on the north bank—no ferry, no tolls, no delays.

@BrettMendoza_ Tapping out to leave not a good idea imo. Just a cause of queues and more general irritation. Not to mention that it’s not a job. They just need to either sort the trains out or (better) lobby for a tram system between Brighton, Falmer and Lewes

Albion are talking to the Fans Advisory Board about ideas to keep stands as full as possible until full-time. It's a theme we've mentioned before, altho fans leave early at lots of venues. Maybe it's more obvious now than in the days of terraces. #bhafc theargus.co.uk/sport/25929960…
