We are deeply saddened by the passing of Magdaleno “Leno” Rose-Avila — a visionary human rights leader whose life was devoted to the pursuit of justice, dignity, and solidarity across movements and communities. Throughout Rose-Avila's remarkable career, he built bridges across civil rights and human rights struggles, bringing people together with compassion and an unwavering belief in our shared humanity. He was not just a deeply beloved and respected leader in the United States but also at our organization. As former Director of Amnesty International USA's Death Penalty Program and Western Regional Director in the 1990s, he led with wisdom, courage and integrity. His legacy endures in the generations of advocates, organizers, and defenders he inspired. We honor Rose-Avila with deep gratitude, and by continuing to light a candle in the darkness. Rest in power, Leno.
