In 2004, I spent 2 months as the OC of the NEP and HFC at ND. We went on to win Super Bowl 39 then proceeded to go to back to back BCS games at ND. For coaches doing double duty right now, they want the same thing. Both jobs matter. Sleep has to be put on the backburner. Grind.

@Genetics56 Rooting for a conference instead of a school like your account does remains some of the most bizarre behavior of CFB fandom over the past decade. I’m trying to fathom a bears fan be happy about packers/vikings success. Mental illness

Now that USC vs ND is dead, ND football will be moved into the "passive viewership" interest since there is no need to know what their strengths and weaknesses are since they don't play USC anymore. Oh well. Millions of other people will be doing that now, BTW.

@DanWolken @georgewrighster This incredibly specific hypothetical is fascinating. I bet it’s exactly what Jen Cohen and Lincoln Riley began planning around when they began looking for ways out of this annual rivalry game a couple years ago. Great work as always!

@georgewrighster Consider this scenario. 9-2 USC beats 10-1 Notre Dame in the last game of the 2026 season so both are 10-2. As a result, the committee ranks USC 11th and ND 12th due to head to head. Yet due to the MOU, ND jumps USC to get the playoff spot. So why would you play them?

USC got the excuse they wanted not to play Notre Dame. They looked at their 2026 schedule and were shaking in their boots. USC is one of the all time best CFB programs and now has resorted to ducking the smoke. Smh.

@nickossello As a ACC lax fan, this terrifies me. Not enough juice left in the conference if ND leaves. My wife claims they have floated an invite to Towson to replace ND in this scenario. She gets together with Jim Phillips every other Saturday night so I actually trust her on this.

If Notre Dame leaves the ACC due to this football fiasco, the sport with the biggest drop in power rankings? Lacrosse. Notre Dame has been carrying the ACC since joining, and a departure would devastate the conference, likely not qualifying for an AQ. Something to watch!

@RossDellenger Ross, does this logic suggest ND makes the playoff if BYU loses a closer game? And why wouldn’t ND have jumped Bama for the same reason Miami jumped BYU? Every time the committee speaks, their logic sounds more and more backwards.

CFP chair Hunter Yurachek on Miami and Notre Dame: “Once we moved Miami ahead of BYU, we had that side by side comparison and you look at those two teams on paper and they are almost equal. The one metric we had to fall back on was head to head.”

Of all the backwards logic displayed by this committee, my favorite might be the implication that ND makes the playoff if BYU loses a close game yesterday. They only compared ND/UM H2H because they dropped BYU? Insane way to defend your process.

There exists a scenario where one of the following teams will need to be selected by the committee for a CFP spot: - 8-5 Duke - 9-4 Boise State - 10-3 Kennesaw State - 9-4 Troy - 9-4 Western Michigan I know who I’d put in.

@CollegeFBonX As a neutral fan, it’s easily @NDFootball There’s a reason why Vegas has them as a top-5 title contender and every advance metric believed they’re a top 5 team. I want the best teams competing, in January, argue the rest amongst yourselves

@Brett_McMurphy Pitt stands to earn ~$500-700k if Miami makes the playoff as an at-large team. Do you really expect Narduzzi to give an honest answer when money is on the line?

Pitt’s Pat Narduzzi has played both Miami & Notre Dame. I asked him who should get a playoff berth b/w the two? “Miami. They’re both tough & imposing, but Miami is powerful up front & plays a really physical brand of football.” on3.com/news/pat-nardu…
