Mark Knopfler has magic in his fingertips. Even though the film is mediocre on a good day, Mark’s ‘Local Hero’ film score is one of the best from a rock musician. Can anyone name other guitarists who’ve composed memorable film scores?

Here's a wild anecdote: while teaching high school students about genocide in 1993, Walz had them use GIS data to predict where the next one would occur. They said Rwanda. (the NYT verified this via interviews with some of those students in a 2008 story)

About to post tonight's letter and it has just hit me how much we are trying to absorb. The rally shooting was just 12 days ago. Then the RNC. Vance. Biden refused the nomination just 4 days ago. Harris clinched the nomination 32 hours later. Now EVERYTHING has changed. Stunning.

I don’t really get personal on my posts, but I’m gonna make an exception with this one. Pull up a seat, I’ll tell you a story. I live in southwestern Pennsylvania. Born and raised here. 1970s and 1980s were my childhood years. I can remember all of us talking about going to work in the steel mills when we grew up. In my town, we had three - Braddock’s Edgar Thompson plant, Homestead mill, and Tube city international. This place was BOOMIN. Kennedy and Nixon came here in the 1960 for their first debate, even! Then Ronald Reagan was elected… When the mills closed, it killed the area. Historic towns such as Braddock, McKeesport, Homestead, were devastated. In the 40 years since, these towns have continued to struggle. Some look like war zones due to lack of repair. That is, until Joe Biden and Kamala Harris came into office. Below are photos from yesterday. I was driving through Clairton, and saw these being built. Thanks to Joe Biden’s infrastructure plan, the Allegheny county area is getting a revamp that’s been FIFTY YEARS in the making. They’re building overpasses and freeway extensions To shorten the sometimes hours-long drive to Pittsburgh and beyond. They’re expanding our older roadways that can barely fit 2 cars on them in some places. It seriously made me cry. I hadn’t been over that way in a bit, so really didn’t even know it had started. You will not take this away from us, @dnc @TheDemocrats. Leave my president, my candidate, Joe Biden, alone. #DemVoice1 #DemsUnited #USDemocracy #UnitedforAmerica

@Mark_Stryker Tell me. It's collectors, magpies and folk who seldom dream that inflate ($). I have hundreds and hundreds of records, and, not once have I bought something simply to have; I've listened and sweated over every one, understanding musicians and their music. Musical value essential.

The number of LPs I bought used in the 1980s for $3 to $6 that now trade at insanely high prices, especially considering that musically they might be ok but not extraordinary, continues to astound me. Today’s example: $159 median price, $354 high price per Discogs.
