In one of my rad bio courses our instructor cautioned us against trusting Western blots that lacked quantitative measurements relative to the control lane, such as normalized cross-correlation coefficients or density ratios. This image manipulation in this article is why.

Were two separate, major lines of Alzheimer’s research tainted by image fabrication, with far-reaching implications for the field? I take a deep look for @ScienceMagazine science.org/content/articl… 🧵 1/11

@ashleyruba One of the harder things to get across is what opportunity cost really means. It's not just money, it's the stability and freedom that money enables. Going into industry is viewed as a kind of death, rather than as a way to stabilize your own life.

@rasmansa @conor64 The audience effect here is similar to the utility of arguing online. It's often impractical to convince an active participant since they are emotionally invested, but passive readers can and will be moved by good arguments.

@conor64 The point isn't to convince the target of the mockery, but to let them know their position is not socially acceptable *and* (and often more importantly), to indicate that to those in the audience. Often that audience is then given courage for other circumstances.

A q for folks on the other side of the *Is disdainful mockery of others online an effective behavioral intervention?* debate: have you personally ever supported a pol or policy or taken an action you believed to be wrong because others mocked you/what you believed was right?

@MichaelEMann @JoeBiden Many leaders (and citizens) of wealthy nations believed that they could spend their way out of climate change. Events like these show what has always been true: Money alone isn't enough. We are going to have to act if we want to live in a different world.

In joint press conference with @joeBiden, Angela Merkel cites the devastating climate change-fueled extreme weather events (epic floods) impacting Germany right now (which coincide w/ record heat/drought/fires in U.S.) as reason for urgent action on climate. A critical moment.

@Noahpinion Cryptonomicon is great, but honestly I prefer Diamond Age over it. Part of that is the length and another part is that Cryptonomicon felt a little more self-indulgent on Stephenson's part.

@MichaelEMann @WeatherProf @CBSNews The article states that it's contentious that wandering jet stream/blocking events will be more common, but reading the linked article makes it seem like this is an issue of the definition. If that's the case, how robust are the models of CC on those?

I'm pleasantly surprised that the Chauvin trial has the result it does. It doesn't fix the systematic issues behind the lack of police accountability, but I'm glad it didn't end up like the Brailsford trial in 2016.

@dgershwin @CarbonHealth This happened to my wife and I today as well. Extraordinarily frustrating because the rescheduling reason we got by text was "appoint schedule re-balancing".

Just got notification from @CarbonHealth that a #CovidVaccine appt. that had been scheduled weeks ago just got rescheduled. The message said if the newly rescheduled time doesn't work, to reschedule. Problem is: no times/dates available. #FranzKafka, please help!

What do you think are the most memorable Trump lies since his inauguration? Most egregious, confusing, funny, pointless, offensive - whatever stands out.
