Will life be different on other planets? Can we build living systems that depart from what we know? In terms of the logic, maybe not. Check my last paper with several @sfiscience colleagues on the "Fundamental constraints on the logic of living systems" preprints.org/manuscript/202…

It was incredible to work in Will's group at Georgia Tech. I was very lucky to work and learn from such an amazing scientist and person. Thanks for everything @wc_ratcliff ! Here is a picture from the day I defended - what a day!

My final paper from my time in @wc_ratcliff's group was just published at @eLife! This paper explores the consequences of early multicellular life cycles on the evolution of multicellularity. For a great big picture overview, see this great thread by Will. 1/

Well, one of my favorite papers (3rd fav!) of my career was just published at @eLife. Here, we do what we do best: generate new understanding of the factors shaping multicellular evolution through a combo of synthetic biology, exptl evolution and theory. elifesciences.org/articles/84336

@waynelforBernie @ricard_sole @manlius84 @_AlexArenas These are complementary. Embodiment is clearly important (in Rosen terms, the "realization"), but this embodiment has been given way too much attention, while the organizational/complexity account, is barely scratched. As you said, embodiment constrains. Complexity expands.

@PedroM_Z @ricard_sole @manlius84 @_AlexArenas Ultimate (M,R) while substrate independent is about the closure of the set of "mechanical models" of the system its not clear to me whether phenomena like bioelectric networks are encompassed by something like Louie " repair bundle" . May just be I haven't figured it out yet

@waynelforBernie @ricard_sole @manlius84 @_AlexArenas Levin's work is interesting in its own right, but giving primacy to "bioelectricity" would miss the point that life is not linked to any given material substrate/process. And constrains our vistas of complexity. This already happened with molecular biology ("biomolecularicity").

Just finished binge-listening The Santiago Boys by @evgenymorozov. Cybernetics, cold war, terrorism, idealism, power struggles, and much more, centered on Chile 🇨🇱 50 years ago. Highly recommended. the-santiago-boys.com

I guess the bird app is in its last stretch, but I'll still report that I had a great week visiting the groups of @ricard_sole and @svalver. Very stimulating conversations 👌🏼🤯
