SA has Africa’s largest and most advanced weapons industry and is among the world’s top 20 arms exporters and exported $590 million in weapons in 2025, almost three times $210 million from the previous year. The biggest orders came from Germany, which uses South African weapons to refill its stockpiles after supplying Israel and Ukraine, meaning SA exports are effectively contributing to enabling Israel’s suppliers to continue arming Israel. Another big buyer is the UAE, which forwards munitions to the RSF in Sudan. This is even though the RSF has been accused of crimes against humanity, including genocide of non-Arabs in Sudan, by the ICC, Human Rights Watch, Genocide Watch, and the US government.
