@theobertram Yes but also no, based on current welfare rules and minimum auto-enrolment contribution rates, millions of lower earners are sacrificing current consumption for private savings which will simply replace means-tested welfare in retirement 👀

Workplace pension auto-enrolment perhaps the greatest - certainly the most under-appreciated - anti-poverty measure of this century?

It didn’t take Nostradamus to see this Labour government would be a disaster…however bad it is now, if Ed Miliband gets to be Chancellor, it’ll get a LOT worse. If Burnham is to team up with him then I hope Burnham loses the by-election

@MarkDampier It’s not even been 2 years yet since the election. Quite impressive how quickly they’ve managed to foul it up

If only we had our own sources of oil and gas, instead of having to quietly buy it from a country we’re fighting Britain loosens sanctions on diesel derived from Russian oil thetimes.com/article/56bc37…

Today we’re forcing a vote in Parliament to get Britain drilling and save 200,000 jobs. Labour MPs have a choice: Vote to back North Sea Oil & Gas, or back Ed Miliband’s plan to completely shut down a hugely profitable British industry.

@max__young @GuidoFawkes Absolutely! The lesson from pensions is if you agree to a voluntary scheme, Labour will use that as justification for trying to force through a mandatory scheme. RESIST!

@SimonApperley Separately I’d look to simply the tax system, try and get rid of those silly thresholds, ideally merge NI and tax

@PensionsMonkey That would also push a lot of those around the £100k mark who use pension saving to avoid the weird income tax levels at that point to have to pay more tax.

@SimonApperley @andcino Makes sense to have a system with some guardrails around access, to ensure the funds are used sustainably in later life

@andcino @PensionsMonkey I wondered the same, but employer unlikely to contribute to an ISA. Also ISA has a cap on contributions each year.
