@consumerofmonch @kftwt I’ve probably inhaled a lot during my 40Y career in coal mining, oil industry, quarrying, heavy engineering & construction which have not been good for me, but needs, or as ur generation would say ‘wants’ must. I certainly won’t be taking as much out of the system as I’ve put in!

@kftwt @consumerofmonch That’s your decision. I’ve 1 son early 30s in London who’s worked VV hard & is now getting ahead & another in late 20s who also worked VV hard but never quite made it so moved to Dubai a couple of years ago & is just starting to get ahead now. Both had to work VV hard regardless

In my case, like most, I didn’t just walk into a job as an MP (ok, some do). I was a dishwasher, factory worker, steward, Post Office counter clerk, youth worker, cover supervisor, teacher, headteacher, then an MP - and now back in education. My advice to anyone - keep at it.

Great post from @benleo444 “Oh, there's a lot of opportunities If you know when to take them, you know? There's a lot of opportunities If there aren't, you can make them” 🎶 Life is hard. The most successful people are the ones who realise this and get on with it.
Ben Leo@benleo444

Yeah I suddenly walked into a TV presenting job with the click of a finger… I worked in Sainsbury’s, for EDF Energy, the water board, call centres, all from age 17, just to get money. I didn’t care what job I did, I just needed to support myself. I said yes to everything, trusting that I’d one day get there and everything would work itself out. I didn’t turn down jobs because it wasn’t my field or what I wanted or dreamed of right that minute or think I was above anything or anyone. I had no money. I never went to uni. I saved hard for a £5,000 journalism course, I then worked like a dog at local newspapers (still on minimum wage) and at a bookmaker at the same time doing 20 hour days for years just to keep grinding. I spent more hard years commuting to London and back, doing graveyard shifts at papers then waiting at Blackfriars station at 3 in the morning to get home to Sussex and start my other job at 9am. It nearly killed me. For years. 16 years it took me to get here. And you know what? I loved it all. I loved the journey, I loved the dark moments asking myself if it was all worth it. I loved the wins. I loved the hard lessons. And I love what I’m doing now. Yes I have the best job in the world (for me) and I’m incredibly grateful. And I’m still grinding. I’ve just done 14 days straight, travelling to Texas, Florida, then DC. Doing a three hour show every night. But I recognise how fortunate I am. I always have, even when I was stacking shelves. I didn’t just turn up at a studio and start presenting. Most importantly I never played the victim.

@kftwt @consumerofmonch The UK you’re seeking is, and has never been, anything more than a pipe dream! The things you ‘want’ now (big weddings, fancy holidays, flash cars, etc.) our generation went without then so we could afford them now. You want the rewards without having put in the hard work first.

@SirDanofC I hate to break it you but the world also changed a lot in the last 50 years! What we did was learn to adapt to those changes whereas all you’re doing is whinging about them!

Sir Dan of C - School Reports etc
Im specifically bashing the "I’m alright Jack" type of boomer who seems to think that telling kids to pull their socks up is all that’s needed. The world has changed.
Manic Miner@man1cm1ner

@SirDanofC I think we can all agree things need fixing but bashing boomers is not the answer. Policies that could heavily impact house prices could be nonstop on downsizing or for the over 65s. . No golden handshake public pension could save a quarter of council tax.

I hate to say this I really do but there is no other way to say it why does the Millenial only see themselves as special victims not understanding the normal life course, the normalcy of our politics. They actually believe it is only them who have been shafted by politicians. We have a terryfying lack of comprehension of British political & social history. This is the Bridgerton generation where fantasy is their historical fact
Beorma 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿@BeormasSpam

@redrumlisa @dstephenh99 Yeah, but you know what most young people who voted Lib Dem did after they backtracked on student loans? That’s right, they completely deserted them and they had to leave the coalition. Boomers continued to vote for the same people every five years.

@Hossylass @Vender2k10 @Elizabe13014545 Agreed. Many, obviously not all, but many on here at the minute appear to be putting more effort into moaning about how hard their life is rather than getting on and doing something positive about it for themselves!

@PercyB68 @Vender2k10 @Elizabe13014545 This is the issue. You make tough choices for yourself. And there is taxation - being part of a society. The argument in general seems to be that you shouldnt have to make tough choices, and there should be less taxation because younger people dont want it. Just dont want it. 🙄

The answer to the young people complaining how well off the older generation are is for their parents and grandparents to change their wills and leave their money to charity. Perhaps then young people would have to work as hard and make sacrifices as their forefathers did.

@EspressoLucid @ColeFusionHQ Went into coal mines at 15 straight from school & then to university in mid-20s. Sat in lectures with 18YO with ZERO real world experience was embarrassing! My advice, work for 5-10Y first, save money whilst at home, workout what you really want to do with ur life & be realistic.

@ColeFusionHQ To make matters worse, many young people are encouraged to go to uni when there’s no job at the end of it, even if you do a ‘good’ degree. It’s easy to criticise but the entire education system is set up to push you in this direction.

@Vender2k10 @Hossylass @Elizabe13014545 So do you feel that you were also ‘exploited’ by forgoing holidays for 20years & living off of beans on toast… or did you simply just do it because you WANTED to do it as per @Hossylass original post?

@PercyB68 @Hossylass @Elizabe13014545 Absolutely not, things should be earned 100%. EG: I haven’t had a holiday since 2004. For our deposit my wife & I LITERALLY had beans on toast as a diet. But there’s a difference between earning something a being hard done by. A single FT wage should be enough to buy a house.

@Vender2k10 @Hossylass @Elizabe13014545 Whereas your mentality seems to be that you’re not prepared to be ‘hard done by’ and go without and that those that were ‘hard done by’ and did decided to go without in order to get on should somehow now financially support your lifestyle choices?

@FrankZephyr2 @Dont49805744493 @tcanham459 YOU have to decide what’s important in your life & YOU have to do whatever it takes to make it happen. If you’re not prepared to make the sacrifices necessary then it’s clearly not that important to YOU.

@Davidpr52119342 @Colin802783958 Exactly this 1 year ago. Kids now finally gone so 5-bed detach too big. Wanted 3-bed semi in same area (close to daughter/grankids). By the time we’d have paid taxes, fees, moving costs, etc. we’d struggle to release £50K. No point just to release £50K. We’re staying put for now!

@Colin802783958 No one should be forced to downsize, but at the same time they also shouldn’t be penalised for downsizing. My parents want to downsize, but the additional costs like stamp duty etc mean it’s just not worth it, so they stay in a house with 3 spare bedrooms and a huge heating bill

I'm early Gen X, few years off stage pension yet. If I sell my house to release equity, that's about £100k - or around 8 years income. I'll move into a 1 or 2 bed. Problem with that is I'll now be in first time buyer's housing stock. Damned if I do, damned if I don't.

@Dont49805744493 @FrankZephyr2 @tcanham459 I’ve regularly done 6H+ for years & still do at least 2-3 times/month! I’m 55 & mortgage paid off … it’s called work ethic. I also spent years working away from home & my young family, cos that’s what you do! What we didn’t do was simply make excuses why we didn’t WANT to!

My daughter owns her own house in West Sussex. My two stepdaughters own their own houses in Cornwall. My eldest grandson is buying his own house, on his own, in Lancashire. My eldest granddaughter is buying her own flat, on her own, in East Sussex. Because they have a work ethic and aren't spendthrifts.

@linmeitalks “Level of selfishness” you say? I say your level of ‘self entitlement’! If you were my daughter demanding I sold my house to help you out I’d look to an equity release scheme, spend the money released enjoying myself and leave you the scraps to fight over once I was dead!

There are boomers sitting in large houses who don’t even want to free up equity or sell their house to help their own children get on the ladder. This is the level of selfishness we are dealing with. Thank god for parents like my mother She would sell her house in Tottenham tomorrow if it meant helping me…. And I would do anything to make her life comfortable- that’s what family is about. An eco system of giving. These days many boomers don’t want to help with grandchildren or finacial assistance and children don’t want to help their parents - so much selfishness between recent generations and it will get worse.

@JRB___2 @Benjibontheta @canadiancarol1 I’m 55 in a couple of months so have been working hard, earning good money & paying large sums of that money into the system for 40 years. My mortgage is now paid, my kids grown-up & educated, etc. but I’m still up & out by 6AM most days, grafting!
