Hypothesis only:
The injury on the child appears more consistent with the IDF’s version that the child was wounded by shrapnel.
A cigarette burn is typically clearly round and symmetrical, with well-defined edges (just search “cigarette burn” online and see for yourself). The borders also tend to be relatively “clean,” not torn.
Here, however, there is a very noticeable lack of symmetry. The edges are not rounded, and they include irregular extensions with more angular, torn-looking margins.
There are clear signs of cutting and tearing, which points more toward an injury caused by a sharp fragment rather than a localized heat source. A burn would usually affect the tissue in a more uniform, cauterized manner.
