This focus on boundary maintenance may come at the expense of innovation and influx of fresh ideas - our prior work indeed suggests that multidisciplinary science often turns out to be more impactful (pubsonline.informs.org/doi/10.1287/or…).

But we suggest that in contests that are about admitting candidates to a closed entity, like a discipline, profession or even organization, evaluators discriminate in order to maintain the boundary (and identity) of the entity they are representing.

Being multidisciplinary can be costly. Discipline gatekeepers penalize multidisciplinary scientists in evaluation contests; in a newly published study, we find the highest performing individuals are penalized the most. bit.ly/3POcEiY, @OrganizationSci.
