The results suggest that public subsidies might be systematically more effective in supporting companies operating in industrial domains dominated by higher technological uncertainty relative to market uncertainty. 6/6

Public subsidies appear to be less effective for digital university spinoffs than for other types of technology ventures. An interesting article examines the impact of public subsidies on university spinoffs in the University of California. 1/6 #bb0005" target="_blank" rel="nofollow noopener">sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

Should taxpayers subsidise university spinoff companies? The answer is "yes" for deeptech and biotech companies, but possibly "no" for digital companies. Check out our Research Policy article, just out: sciencedirect.com/science/articl…. We study University of Californa spinoffs.

This focus on boundary maintenance may come at the expense of innovation and influx of fresh ideas - our prior work indeed suggests that multidisciplinary science often turns out to be more impactful (pubsonline.informs.org/doi/10.1287/or…).

But we suggest that in contests that are about admitting candidates to a closed entity, like a discipline, profession or even organization, evaluators discriminate in order to maintain the boundary (and identity) of the entity they are representing.

Being multidisciplinary can be costly. Discipline gatekeepers penalize multidisciplinary scientists in evaluation contests; in a newly published study, we find the highest performing individuals are penalized the most. bit.ly/3POcEiY, @OrganizationSci.
