@ArcticSchola @JLLiedl @Fr_B_Wirth I should clarify: I understand what he means about the reaction being different. I do not understand what means about how it “says a lot” about Trump that he went after the Pope instead. What does it say about him, exactly?

@Perl_of_Wisdom @JLLiedl @Fr_B_Wirth I’ll hazard it means we’ve been battling [in futility] to be rid of these psychotic old Queens, and would welcome his bellicose idiocy if aimed at them — but instead he goes after the Gladiator Gandhi, indeed Christ’s vicar on Earth.

If Trump would've instead gone after the 3 cardinals from the 60 minutes pkg that triggered him, said they are liberals who don't represent most Catholics, etc, the reaction would've likely been very different. The fact that he *didn't* and instead attacked Pope Leo says a lot.

What we know about the pope: • AGAINST Nuclear Weapons • Spoke repeatedly about protestors in Iran • Repeatedly called out persecution in Nigeria and met their bishops last month • Says that he is against the USA having 'open borders' • Not only not a Communist but visited the tomb of Francisco Franco on pilgrimage • Strong language against abortion, IVF, euthanasia • Spoke publicly about Catholics murdered by Muslims on first day of his visit to Algeria

@JLLiedl Different how? As in, conservatives are more likely to be taking Leo’s side than they were to be taking Francis’s side?

I was already planning on writing something noting how the dynamic of Trump and Leo has already felt very very different than Trump and Francis in terms of conservative US Catholic reception. And then tonight happened.

“Plushie” and “stuffie” and not words, and just started being used ex nihilo a few years ago. Just say “stuffed animal” or “plush toy” like a decent, God fearing member of society.

@Joeinblack I agree, Father. But in fairness to them, the prior pontiff had a habit of saying whatever popped into to his head at a particular moment and leaving people to sort out how it might comport with Catholic teaching after the fact. And I suspect that’s where some of this originated.

There’s a lot of accounts on X that claim to be Catholic and they treat the holy father’s words as if they’re just another opinion to be evaluated and judged. These are people you should avoid.

@mattswaim Not a priest, but I would just add for historical context that the Asperges rite used to take place in every parish, every Sunday, and nobody ever considered it to effect baptism.

Priest friends How would you respond to an Easter Vigil visitor who wonders if they got drive-by baptized during the rite of sprinkling since they said the congregational responses, got hit w/the aspergillum, and crossed themselves I think I know what to say but just checking

I was pleased to speak today with His Eminence, Cardinal Christophe Pierre.  As expected, he confirmed that recent media characterizations of his meeting with Undersecretary Colby are “fabrications” that were “just invented.” Given the intelligence and seriousness of Mr. Colby, I was likewise not suprised when His Eminence acknowledged there were no threats of any kind in the meeting.  “It was a frank and cordial meeting that took place two months ago.”  Threat of Avignon? “None.”
DOW Rapid Response@DOWResponse

Under Secretary of War for Policy Elbridge Colby @USWPColby had a substantive, respectful, and professional meeting with Cardinal Pierre, the then-Papal Nuncio, and his team on January 22, 2026. During the cordial meeting, they discussed a range of topics, including issues of morality in foreign policy, the logic of the U.S. National Security Strategy, Europe, Africa, Latin America, and other topics. Cardinal Pierre expressed his appreciation for the outreach and both sides looked forward to continued open and respectful dialogue. In light of grossly false and distorted recent reporting, the Department of War repeats its statement: Recent reporting of the meeting is highly exaggerated and distorted. The meeting between Pentagon and Vatican officials was a respectful and reasonable discussion. We have nothing but the highest regard and welcome continued dialogue with the Holy See.

@ZacMabry If you’re talking about the Pillar article, it certainly does not prove that the rise in conversions isn’t real. They have only a tiny sample of 2026 data; the rest is from 2024 and earlier.

@lukei4655 I have seen that done at a Pontifical High Mass. I’m not sure if I have ever seen it done at a Novus Ordo Mass.

Bishops should preach from their throne (or faldstool when applicable). Skill issue if they can’t effectively do so.

@Pro__Trading There is nothing wrong with Amy Coney Barrett. Nor is she less solid a justice than Kavanaugh or Gorsuch. This casual dismissal of her is so weird. All three picks were terrific.

I love Justices Alito and Thomas more than anyone. They are American heroes. But they won't live forever. Alito is 76. Thomas is 77. The average life expectancy for males in the United States is 76. If the Democrats win in 2028, there's a very good chance they will be choosing two new Supreme Court justices. We need to consider having Alito and Thomas retire so that President Trump can replace them with younger Republicans. We don't want a Ruth Bader Ginsburg situation to happen to us. And I understand you're worried about getting another Amy Coney Barrett, but would you rather get another Ketanji Brown Jackson?

Holy Thursday, 2003. I’m entering seminary in a few months and my diocese has already accepted me and has me wearing the cassock in liturgical settings. My pastor wants to wash my feet, to show off the new seminarian, I guess. I’m a shy person, I don’t need any extra cause for embarrassment, so I go to great lengths to make sure my feet are clean, my nails are clipped, I’ve got a fresh new pair of black socks to match my cassock. I’m first up at the foot washing in front of the whole congregation. He has me take my sock off. Brand new sock is FULL of black lint. It’s washing off my foot into the common bowl, the water is just full of soaked, black fluff. Everyone else is getting nasty black cotton poured over their own feet. Because the pastor had to show off the dumbass seminarian.

@mattswaim Holy Thursday. I only ever heard Maundy from Protestants growing up. Lately I have seen it online from some of the traddiest trads (e.g., Taylor Marshall).

If the church you go to has a service or liturgy of some kind tonight, do you call it: (helpful if you mention what kind of church, I am always interested in the variety)
