Every morning before sunrise, we get up together, brew a fresh pot of coffee, sit and talk, and read our Bibles. As I get ready for work, my wife begins her work with a grateful heart and bakes eight loaves of sourdough bread using a 100-year-old starter. The night before, she stretches and folds the dough by hand. This is our tradition—a simple, faithful rhythm that reminds us every day of God’s faithful provisions. She does it for our thirteen grandchildren, our dear friends, and the customers who count on her bread. Occasionally she makes a batch of buttermilk sourdough biscuits from my grandmother’s old recipe, and every warm bite feels like a blessing straight from the Lord.
Some folks will read this and roll their eyes, calling it archaic or chauvinistic, but they don’t know my wife. She’s college-educated with a degree in accounting, a successful business owner, a seasoned bridge player, well-read, and she can still saddle her own horse and ride with the best of them. This is simply who we are—grateful, grounded, and blessed.

Very rarely do you see a coach do this:
1) Take FULL responsibility AND increase his own expectations moving forward.
2) Share SPECIFICALLY where HE went wrong (while also not singling anybody out negatively).
This is how it's done.
We got this, @LSUCoachJ!
John Eads WAFB-TV@JohnEadsWAFB
"It's a deep-rooted thing, we're off and this will never happen again" Blunt honesty from Jay Johnson about some of the things plaguing the #LSU offense this year. Says he made mistakes in roster construction with his team this year.

Every player I ever coached was asking me the same 3 questions.
They never said them out loud.
It didn't matter what the lineup looked like.
It didn't matter what the scoreboard said.
They just needed to know 3 things.
And every leader, every coach, every parent is being asked the same ones.
Here they are.
Question #1: Can I trust you?
Trust isn't given. It's earned.
You earn it through transparency and honesty not when things are going well, but when things are hard.
How I built it:
• Do what you say you're going to do
• Tell them what they need to hear, not what they want to hear
• Show up the same way whether you're winning or losing
You lose trust fast. You build it slow.
Question #2: Can you make me better?
This one is on you as a leader.
They're not just asking about their swing or their stats.
They're asking: do you see me clearly enough to help me grow?
Question #3: Do you care about me?
This is the most important one. And you can't fake it.
You can't lead anybody if they don't believe you care about them beyond what they produce on the field.
Three questions. No stat tracks them. But they determine everything.

“It was 5:00 AM in the hitting cage. No lights. No crowd. No attention. Just Devin and a bucket of baseballs. He had made a decision. He didn’t just want to play. He wanted to be the best.
But what set him apart wasn’t just the early mornings. It was everything around them. He chose sleep over scrolling. Preparation over popularity. He adjusted his schedule, guarded his time, and stayed disciplined when no one was watching.
While others did what was easy, he committed to what was required. Quietly. Consistently. Day after day, those small decisions started to show up. His swing improved. His confidence grew. He got better.
People noticed later. Called him lucky. But they never saw the cost.
Excellence isn’t built in the spotlight. It’s built in the decisions no one sees.
You can’t do what everyone else does and expect results few achieve.
The question isn’t whether you can be excellent. It’s whether you’re willing to be different.”

You will find what you’re looking for.
If you look for conflict, it will show up. If you look for something to criticize, you won’t have to search long. If you want to be offended, you’ll find evidence. But if you look for gratitude, that will show up too.
Gratitude does not deny reality. It does not pretend circumstances are easy. It does not ignore what needs to be addressed. It simply refuses to let what’s wrong blind you to what’s good.
There is always something broken. There is always something frustrating. There is always something unfinished. But there is also always something to be thankful for.
A conversation.
A sunrise.
A text from a friend.
A healthy child.
Another opportunity to try again.
Gratitude shifts your focus. And where you fix your eyes shapes your story.
Two people can live the same day and walk away with two completely different narratives. One collects evidence of inconvenience. The other collects evidence of grace. Same day. Different lens.
If today feels heavy, start small. Name three things you’re thankful for before noon. Say them out loud. Write them down. Text someone and tell them why you’re grateful for them.
You may not control every circumstance. But you can control what you look for.
And what you look for, you will find.

Pray THIS with me. (Even if you don’t think you need it)
February 9, 2026
Lord Jesus,
I come to You honest and undone, carrying my failures, my regrets, and the weight of all the times I knew better but chose otherwise. I have tried to fix myself, outrun my past, and justify my sin, and it has only left me tired. Today I stop running. I believe You are who You say You are, the Son of God, the Savior who stepped into my mess and took my place at the cross.
Thank You for being the God of second chances, and third, and a thousand more. Thank You that my past does not disqualify me from Your grace. I confess that I need You. I turn from my old life and I turn toward You. Wash me clean, make me new, and teach my heart how to follow You one step at a time.
I receive the gift of forgiveness, not because I deserve it, but because You freely give it. Take what is broken in me and breathe Your life into it. Give me a new heart, a new direction, and the courage to live differently from this day forward. I trust You with my future, my identity, and my soul.
Jesus, I give You my life.
Amen

High Expectations
“Set an example in speech, conduct, love, faith and purity.” —1 Timothy 4:12
Life can be full of pressure—from school, sports, and life. Focus on what you can control: your heart, actions and faith. Jesus is with you in every challenge.

Gratitude turns ordinary days into blessings.
Sometimes, we forget how much we already have, breath in our lungs, purpose in our story, and a new chance every morning. Today, take a moment to thank God not for what’s coming, but for what already is.
Peace begins with appreciation.
Choosing gratitude.
Again and again.
