@PeterOnion @ForrisHilier I thought the Williams Tube was the memory and removing the front cover for a sneaky peek lost bits? How were the bits addressed? never asked Tom (amazingly - largely due to age I could have - as he taught me at Manchester - more interested in his 1 level storage concept!)

@ForrisHilier You are correct, raster displays came later. What was being confused was a display of the memory on a CRT (like a Williams Tube) and then it was likened to the Type 30 display on a DEC PDP-1, which while it displayed single points was not intended as a hardware debugging device.

Just left a face book group after being told by a "Top Contributor" that I need to learn how vintage computers work !

9 years ago today - Testing the @Astro_Pi computers before they get sent to space with @astro_timpeake on mission #Principia. Roll forward to today and were seeing young people mention their code going to space on applications for early career opportunities at @AirbusintheUK .👍

For those who may be vaguely interested in my attempt to get #PiForce1 past 200K miles, I regret to announce that a catastrophic engine failure occurred at 186K Revs dropped from 3K to zero in 1.5 sec 🤔. Fortunately with some rapid clutch work managed to coast into a lay-by 😳

@daveake Not done too bad - I calculate 18p a mile total life cost from new. Incl service, repairs, tax, insurance.

@daveake Not sure - apparently metal in the oil is crankshaft related (I'm no expert but it seems to make sense).

@JohnChinner Sure did - even hardware engineers can live in hope that it was a software bug🙈 Chunks of metal in the oil filter sealed the deal!😳

@aallan @Raspberry_Pi Writing excellent documentation is a skill few properly master. It's a key driver for folks new to a product and provides a frictionless (as possible) route to understanding. Thanks for you significant contribution to the mission and good luck with all your future adventures 👍

After just over four years, today will be my last day at @Raspberry_Pi. It’s been a great place to work! I’ve really enjoyed my time there and hope I’ve visibly made some difference to the quality of writing and documentation around the products!
