Sir Keir Starmer and his supporters desperately want Andy Burnham to lose the Markham by election. That means a Reform win. The best way they could achieve this is to convince lots of Labour voters to vote Green. The #FPTP voting system is totally absurd.
Pippa Crerar@PippaCrerar

Greens are going to campaign for the Makerfield byelection, complicating Andy Burnham’s potential route back to parliament. But Caroline Lucas, the party’s former leader, posted: “I hope this isn’t true. There are times when it’s more important to put country before party. This is one of them”. @woof43_gp It’s not that simple. The three other independent candidates - beyond the 42%+ Teal plus Green vote - supported some of those four progressive policies. The total vote for candidates supporting an end to greyhound racing was well over 70%.

@kevinbonham @DrClimate Yeah. Perhaps whoever the commissioned the poll is trying to ascertain which conservative is best placed to defeat the progressives.

@gasugasu1984 Indeed. Also, there are many voters who prefer independents to party candidates, particularly in the LegCo. She was the only independent in Rosevears.

In Huon, over 42% voted for candidates with policies of restricting salmon farming, stopping greyhound racing, no new stadium and stopping native forest logging. Labor had a good candidate but opposed these policies and got less than 17%. #politas

@KeruboSk As a child (in the 1960s) I attended the 100th and 101st birthday of my great grandmother where she played the piano for us. She was born in the 1860s and would have known people born before the French Revolution.

Just out of curiosity… who out there has actually talked to someone born in the 1800s during their lifetime?

@LukeMartin1983 My view about how “history “ will pan out is that Greyhound racing in Tasmania will end, as will the environmentally damaging practices of the aquaculture industry. As for whether Labor will ever choose to negotiate to form government - I have no idea.

@PeterCroger Well, everyone can put their spin on the events. But history will show the crossbenchers “negotiated” outcomes with the Libs that have led to a whole lot of nothing.

For all the navel gazing about Labor last couple of weeks, perhaps some attention might now go on the Greens and progressive independents, who transacted government to the Libs for the grand sum of a “sham” salmon review and a failed greyhound industry shut down. #politas

@LukeMartin1983 The crossbenchers wanted policy benefits, but I don’t believe they demanded anything that was “immediate transactional”. They didn’t get the chance to ask because Dean refused to negotiate. Hence we got Dean’s Liberal government.

@PeterCroger We have a Liberal government because the crossbenchers wanted immediate transactional policy outcomes. Which are blowing up in their face. Bit of a dogs breakfast on all fronts.

Could any wise #politas people explain why Tas Labor is so hopeless? Is Josh a dud? Are the PLP a bunch of dinosaurs? Are some dubious people in the shadows controlling the party? #politas

Labor can’t be in government unless they change their policy offerings and they govern with the cross bench. Josh aspires to do neither. He merely aspires to “hold the Liberals to account”. He thus aspires to being perpetually in opposition. #politas abc.net.au/news/2026-04-1…

@DrClimate @bj_stansfield Dean, who is to the right of Jeremy, was totally stupid in his refusal to negotiate with the cross bench. I don’t know about Josh - is he a leader? My guess is that some in the PLP actually want to be in govt and want progressive policies. I don’t hold great hopes for Labor.

@PeterCroger @bj_stansfield Brad's take is a pretty bold reading of a scattered assortment of tea leaves. After all, we are talking about the same Labor party room that was utterly incapable of negotiating with basically anyone on the crossbench just last year. This part seems especially unlikely:

Interesting comments from @bj_stansfield. He notes that Tas Labor under Josh Willie is moving to the left, as part of a political strategy to form government with Green and indie support. But maybe Josh realises that the Overton Window in Tasmania has moved to the left? #politas

When future historians write about our times, they may call it the age of cowards: the Republicans in the US Congress who won’t remove Trump, US Vice President JD Vance who won’t remove Trump, and Australia’s PM Albanese who dares not speak the moral truth about the Trump regime.

It’s Easter and the US President chose to share this, an unhinged and expletive ridden rant threatening war crimes against the Iranian people. Australians want no part in this and they expect our government to clearly oppose it and organise to prevent it.

Trump is calling on a mixed bag of nations to send ships to join the US Navy in the Straights of Hormuz. He doesn’t specify the command structure or rules of engagement. If Western nations say no, the credibility of the US as a global leader will be severely damaged. Rightly so.

It’s crystal clear now that Trump has lost control of this war. He badly misjudged Iran’s ability to retaliate. The region is on fire. 1/ I’m going to explain to you in this🧵what I’ve learned - in part from closed door briefings - about the four biggest current crises.
