One other point about this. The purpose of the tournament is to crown a champion, and none of these schools who scored these early upsets ever won the championship. It might be entertaining but none of those games ultimately mattered.

@peterdutton @DeadnLift @DisgracedProp PA does not have grocery/gas station liquor licenses. But some stores already sold hot and cold sandwiches, and they realized they could get a restaurant license which allows beer to be sold to go. But it requires seating.

The under-analyzed third space in America is the waiting/eating areas outside of grocery stores. All grocery stores have them, a sort of aimless series of tables or chairs screwed into the concrete outside the store, from Erewhon all the way down to discount grocery, and if you pay attention you'll notice that these areas are always full of people just hanging around. For example the Mexican discount grocery will have a sleeping cowboy, while the Erewhon will have a black man reading a book in a purple suit. These people stay there for extremely long periods of time and seem to buy nothing from the actual store. Grocery stores emit a strange warmth that weirdos are attracted to

I’ve always thought that particular case has more to do with weather/lack of Vitamin D. You don’t see a lot of angry DIY music coming from S. Florida, AZ or NM. Granted there was a lot of angry DIY music coming out of California and New York, but there is a different kind of rebellion in areas with a lot of cloudy days. I would probably add Minneapolis/St.Paul and Chicago. But NE Ohio and Pacific NW are similar in that sense.

One of the puzzles I find myself mulling over -- too often -- is the question of why artistic genius springs up in geographic clusters rather than in some broad, roughly predictable way. So many great musical talents from Seattle all at once? Whatever may be behind this phenomenon, it doesn't seem to operate with AIs, whose outputs don't arrive in this irregular, qualitatively "lumpy" fashion.

Career lasts 3-5 years. The industry finds your replacement before you find yourself. Soldier - prime at 26. The body starts losing the argument at 35. Twenty years in and the pension follows you out. Airline Pilot - spends 20 years in a co-pilot seat. Reaches captain in their 40s. Mandatory retirement at 65. Surgeon - peak performance is 35-50. It takes a decade of training just to get in the room. Hands and eyes start losing the margin for error after 65. Lawyer - peaks at 50. The courtroom rewards experience. Every year you practice, the credential compounds. Plumber / Electrician - peaks at 50. Recessions, AI, outsourcing, none of it can reach them. Landlord - no peak. Tenants pay the mortgage while you sleep. Investor - Buffett made 95% of his wealth after turning 65. Most people think it's too late by then. Most people pick a career without knowing where it actually leads. Know the game before you decide to play it.

@timothyjphelan We went to an English-language Mass at the cathedral in Kyoto for Easter last year and it was packed. We were hoping to go again when we're there this year but they only do English Masses every other Sunday, and Easter this year isn't one of those Sundays 😕

Mass tomorrow is at 9:30. It's the only mass of the day. About 40 parishioners will attend. Their average age will be around 75. A missionary priest from Mexico will celebrate the Mass in fluent Japanese. By 10:30 it will be over. Soon after, the parish council will meet. There will be Japanese tea and sweets. God will be there.
