many "sophisticated" viewers actually project their own anti-Americanism on Lynch. But Lnch loved America.

Rewatched 'Blue Velvet', big screen, still think @souljagoyteller is right. Lynch was "conservative", though one influenced by Manichaeism. People point to the cartoonish ending. But they miss the point: both the "light" and the "dark" worlds are painted that way throughout.

Helen Andrews is a sad example of parts of the current "conservative" landscape. Distrust of market competition and a total lack of economic knowledge.

Antitrust is a perpetual tug of war between two visions: one that defers to consumer choice, and one that seeks to correct it. 🧵1/7

Incredibly honored to receive this prize alongside three of my favorite macroeconomists, each pushing the frontier of what can be learned from serious theory, disciplined by an explosion of microdata. As @TimTkehoe says, God bless Minnesota Economics! ... even with frictions

Another thing not widely spoken of in relation to Peter Magyar is he is a disruptor par excellence, in that he basically destroyed the whole Hungarian left. Much of the left-wing opposition was doing quite well under Orbán. Had hefty pay, and the serenity of the underdog.

but even Telex (which was formed of former Index journalists, the latter having been purchased by Orbán cronies) or HVG at first did not play a role in the Magyar Revolution. It was Partizán, the most popular online podcast channel, that first invited Magyar.

One small correction: we absolutely do have more traditional media outlets that were independent of the government (naturally they mostly had an anti-Orbán slant), but these are almost all online news media.
Anna Gát 🧭@TheAnnaGat

For all the people screaming how bad the internet is (usually saying this on the internet & making money with it): Magyar was banned from the Hungarian media, all of it owned by Orbán. His is an internet victory—only new media: streaming, podcasts, blogs, social media Did it! 🔥

One area where Vikotr Orbán did some real good is employment. He did manage to take almost a million people back to the workforce. Unfortunately, this wasn't achieved in a very efficient way. Instead of workfare a la Clinton/Gingrich, he did workfare via public works projects.

Yes, claims of Orban’s authoritarianism were sometimes exaggerated. But he was moving in that direction. And claims he was corrupt were not exaggerated at all. thedispatch.com/article/hungar…

Standard economics treats population as denominator. But if life is worth living, welfare ≈ GDP, not GDP per capita. Japan since 1960: 6x richer per person, population +30%. Mexico: 3x richer per person, 3x more people. The rankings flip entirely.
