BHM 2026: Nolan N. Atkinson Jr. followed in his Vashon ancestors' footsteps with a career in law & received the A. BHM 2026: In 2010, Nolan Atkinson, Paul N.D. Thornell (both descendants of George B. Vashon) & Wendell Freeland successfully petitioned the PA Supreme Court to admit Vashon to the PA Bar, 163 years after his death. BHM 2026: Frances Atkinson, granddaughter of George Vashon, co-founded the Philadelphia Club in 1946 to foster cultural appreciation and civic responsibility. BHM 2026: After settling in Washington, D.C., George B. Vashon helped establish the @HowardU School of Law, & Susan Smith Vashon became principal of the Thaddeus Stevens School. Following her husband's death, Susan settled her family in St. Louis, where the George B. Vashon Museum of African American History preserves their collection. BHM 2026: Susan Smith Vashon, granddaughter of the Rev. Thomas Paul, dedicated her life to education & community service as a teacher, and she established sanitary stations for wounded soldiers & housed Black war refugees during the Civil War. BHM 2026: George B. Vashon dedicated himself to education & mentorship in Pittsburgh as the principal of the city's Black school, & later became president of Avery College. The legacy of Avery College lives on, particularly at @PittTweet, where the Rev. Charles Avery Scholarship is the university’s oldest known endowed scholarship.
