🔬 PhD Position: All-Solid-State Batteries (Hydroborate-Based)
Empa — a world-leading research institution of the ETH Domain — is seeking a PhD candidate to develop next-generation all-solid-state batteries, one of the most exciting frontiers in sustainable energy technology!
📌 What’s the Project About?
This PhD project focuses on hydroborate-based all-solid-state batteries, aiming for a deep mechanistic understanding of electrochemical performance and cycling stability. A particular emphasis is placed on engineering electrolyte-cathode interfaces to unlock high energy and power density.
Key research activities:
✅ Electrolyte synthesis & advanced (electro-)chemical characterisation
✅ Bulk & interfacial characterisation — including muon-based techniques (unique!)
✅ Identifying reaction pathways & degradation mechanisms
✅ Cathode formulation & processing for interfacial stability
✅ Muon-beamline experiments in collaboration with Muoniverse partners
✅ Publishing results & presenting at conferences

🎓 Who Should Apply?
