@Phil_A_Irving That’s probably a fair place to leave it. I understand the fear. You understand my concern about generalising. We may disagree on some causes and solutions, but at least we’ve had a more constructive conversation than most people manage on here.

Good to see all the protests here and in Europe today. But why do lefty antifa protesters all wear hoodies and face masks so only their eyes are visible? Could they be ashamed/embarassed by the side they're on? Or to hide the fact they're the same group being bussed around?

@benjitindz You've reminded me that we need to keep an open mind. Not to paint everyone with the same brush as the villains. But I hope I've helped you understand why the protesters, and me, are doing and saying what we do. You have a point, and so do I and them

@Phil_A_Irving I trust my gut too. The problem is that our brains evolved to detect threats, not statistics. That’s why instinct is excellent for survival, but not always for understanding society.

@benjitindz I always go on gut reaction/instinct. I'm not closed minded and am open to change my opinion if I get proof I'm wrong. I will accept it. Have only had my opinions changed a couple of times but I trust my gut reaction.

@Phil_A_Irving I completely understand that. The difficulty is that personal experience can teach us caution, but it can also lead us to overestimate risk. That’s why I try to balance instinct with evidence.

@benjitindz A simplified analogy. Years ago where I was living was broken into while I was sleeping upstairs. I didn't hear a thing. Afterwards I changed the locks, put in a burglar alarm. Didn't sleep for months & had to move out. Once a fear gets root, it's hard to shift even if groundless

@Phil_A_Irving Yes, I can understand the fear. I don’t think everyone protesting is racist or far right. Where we differ is that I don’t think fear is evidence. People can be genuinely worried and still be wrong about the cause of that worry.

@benjitindz But can you see why thousands are demonstrating today? Can you at least understand why they (and me) are scared/wary? It's not because they are (all) racist and far right. They have genuine fear. It may be thru ignorance, but it's real fear

@Phil_A_Irving I don’t think we’re that far apart. Criminals should be identified, prosecuted and removed where appropriate. I just don’t think the existence of criminal migrants means all migrants should be viewed through that same lens.

@benjitindz We definitely agree on some points. They say one bad apple doesn't spoil the crop, so I can see your point on that. But those coming in on the boats ... if above board, why no documentation? Quite a few of them have gone on to commit sex offences once here. I can't get past that

@Phil_A_Irving I think we probably agree more than we disagree. I support secure borders, integration and tackling crime. Where I differ is that I try not to let the worst examples define millions of people. That’s the bit I struggle with.

@benjitindz I would welcome evidence to change my mind. Just so I can sleep easier.

@Phil_A_Irving The danger is that every piece of evidence now seems to point in the same direction for you. Official statistics can’t be trusted, contrary examples don’t count, and anecdotes become proof. At that point it’s very difficult for any evidence to change your mind.

@benjitindz Funny how there wasn't many wives and children on the beaches too. If I were fleeing a war torn country, I'd take my loved ones with me

@benjitindz Coming with a view to integrate - welcome. I read a report from an Express/Mail reporter on X. He interviewed while undercover, immigrants on the beaches in France. He was told they were coming here for the freebies & to work in gangs selling drugs. I judge them all by his words

@benjitindz As it happens, my family emigrated to Australia when I was 7. (Sadly I came back when I was 25. BIG mistake). Brits emigrating try to fit in to the existing culture from my experience. We didn't take over towns and claim as Brits only allowed.

@Phil_A_Irving By that logic, every Brit who emigrates to Australia, Spain or Canada should have stayed home and fixed Britain instead. People move for countless reasons. The question isn’t where they’re from, it’s how they behave when they get here.

@benjitindz Come into our country legally, with proof of ID and all documentation, and agree to integrate into our society and they're welcome. Don't come here illegally and impose their beliefs/rellgion/society on us. If it worked why the fuck did they leave their own country?

@Phil_A_Irving I support secure borders. I just don’t think “it could be the tip of the iceberg” is evidence. Climate change and global instability will increase migration. The challenge is managing it, not fearing everyone who arrives.

@benjitindz For clarification, the culprit is a British born Pakistani. I said the culprit wasn't likely to be white. And it was in Burnley, where there are protests currently in progress.

@benjitindz Man was stabbed and died in Chelmsford last night by 3 teenagers. No description given of the teenagers. There was another stabbing of a 17 year old girl in the neck last night but I can't remember where. If the culprits are white I'd have the same condemnation for them
