I understand the logistical complexities of getting bags from point A to point B, but I have to vent about Delta Airlines and the absolutely miserable last three days I've had with them. Originally, I was scheduled to fly SLC to JFK to MAD, but due to weather at JFK, our first flight was rerouted mid-flight to Detroit. After not being allowed to get off the plane for 1.5 hours, we refueled in DTW and headed to JFK once the ground-stop was lifted. There were not enough drinks or water to do a secondary beverage service, so what should have been a 3.75 hour flight ended up taking 7.5 hours. We received no meals—a small bag of Cheez-Its, and two cups of water the entire flight (they lied about doing a water service DTW-JFK). It was inevitable that we would miss our flight to Madrid from JFK. While the plane was still on the ground when we landed, it was already boarded and sitting on the skirt getting ready for takeoff. We were placed on a flight automatically by Delta to Paris (then Madrid) to depart a few hours later; in a downgraded class without the baby bassinet we had requested for our infant, who didn't sleep the whole flight. Then, upon landing in Paris, we noticed that our bags never made it onto the plane from New York City. From Paris to Madrid, we flew via Air France (booked by Delta) who is SkyTeam partner. All-in-all, our 21-hour planned travel day ended up taking 37-hours. 🙃 But it happens. The problem is the bags… Air France only flew us for 1.5 hours and never had our bags because Delta had left them in New York City. Upon landing (and bags were confirmed to still be in NYC), Air France indicated to us that they would get the missing bags from Delta and send them to our hotel. Unfortunately, our hotel was five hours away from the airport. So, Air France said they’d wait for them to arrive in Madrid from Delta and then send them regionally to a nearby airport in Spain and have them driven to our hotel within 24 hours. That was more than 36 hours ago and the bags remain in Madrid. Yes, they did arrive to Madrid, finally, on a Delta Airlines plane; however, entire day 18+ hours, they have sat in the airport without moving, which I can verify by Apple AirTags. Delta gives us very little information and is telling us to talk with Air France, which is insane because Air France never had our bags (Delta has had possession of them the entire time). Furthermore, it is Delta who rebooked us for all legs except for our final destination from Paris to Madrid. Air France tells me that because I am a Delta customer and not an Air France customer, that I should call them. But I was (if only for 1.5 hours) an Air France customer. None of them will help connect me to the Spanish airport five hours away where my baggage sits and no amount of Googling has allowed me to find that phone number. My baby has clothes, ointments and sunscreen that we've been unable to find in Spain that is required for our trip. I have lights, a tripod and microphones that I need tomorrow for my iPhone keynote coverage that I almost certainly will not have. I understand that mistakes happen and logistics are hard, but at no point have I received any apology or communication from Delta Airlines that they care to resolve the issue at all, which is remarkably frustrating. And while I think that all customers should be treated equally, airlines don’t operate fairly or equitably giving preference to customers with status; however, despite being diamond status with Delta, I have effectively received a middle finger for inquiring about my bags to begin with. Screw Delta and thanks for ruining the first three days of my trip. (no, I do not wish to be lectured about having the audacity to check bags with an infant on a 2-week trip to Europe—it’s a reasonable thing to do)
