In 1946, Benedict Wallet (B.W.) Vilakazi (1906 - 1947) made history as the first Black South African to earn a doctoral degree from a South African University. He was awarded a Doctor of Literature (D.Litt.) from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) on 16 March 1946 for the Thesis 'The Oral and Written Literature in Nguni.' Prior to his doctorate, he became the first Black South African to teach at the University of the Witwatersrand when he was appointed as a language assistant in 1935.
