Japan welcomes tourists. But in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, some residents are dealing with something they never asked for. Abandoned suitcases. Not at the airport. Not at a hotel. In quiet residential streets near Ikebukuro Station’s west exit. Some residents say they were even scared the suitcases might contain explosives. According to locals, the suitcases often appear around garbage collection days. Places with no security cameras. Back streets. Blind spots. And it is not just suitcases. Food waste. Cup noodle containers. Milk cartons. Unsorted trash. All left around the same places. Then the crows come. Local women in their 60s and 70s say they have had to clean it up themselves. The problem seems to be linked to the rise in short-term rentals and foreign tourists. Some tourists buy a new suitcase in Japan before going home, pack the old one with things they no longer need, and leave it behind. A short-term rental operator said they warn guests not to dump suitcases nearby. But they also said suitcases are left inside rooms after checkout several times a month. Usually broken ones. If guests leave a suitcase inside the room, they charge them 3,000 yen for disposal. And according to them, most guests pay it. So there is a way to get rid of it properly. But some people still leave it on the street, near someone’s home, or at a local garbage collection spot. The tourist leaves. The suitcase stays. The crows come. And the locals clean it up. Tourism is welcome. People loving Japan is a good thing. But this is not okay. Please don’t make local residents clean up the end of your vacation.

UPDATE: Thomas Massie Allegations A woman named Anna who claimed to be Cynthia’s friend came to Massie’s defense on X, who Massie acknowledged, claiming Massie gave Cynthia $5,000 to help her change attorney’s during her divorce. Not hush money.. However, Cynthia herself in this video states she didn’t take his money.. NOW, in a Axios article… regarding the $5k— She says Massie offered her $5k in cash right then—to “just walk away” and drop/not pursue the complaint. She claims this was half of a $10k cash envelope he gave her earlier in the relationship (as a “surety” for incidentals if she quit her prior job). She says she returned the original $10k to him at a Cracker Barrel and did not take the later $5k offer. Massie, I could be wrong, has flatly denied ever offering West $5,000 (or any cash) for any reason, including for a divorce attorney. This reply to Anna is the only thing I could find close to that. Someone is lying…

No. You want to know why we can’t have nice things. Because of what’s not pictured here. Nobody tries to stop her at any point. First her parents failed, then her community failed, and then her government failed. Absolutely everyone around her, and people like her, is failing to stop this. What the hell would be so awful about just telling her “stop it now, those are for everyone, and not just you.” Heck, I’d have no problem if she was restrained and removed. If you want nice things, don’t let rude people ruin them.
