At ITC, we have just started a EU-funded project in Senegal as part of the West African Competitiveness Programme. Three sectors will be covered: Mango, onion and ICT. For the mango and onion sectors, cooperatives will be revamped.

ITC participated in the 40th meeting of the COMESA Inter-Governmental Committee in Lusaka, 25-27 Nov 2019. The ITC-COMESA relationship has grown even bigger folllowing the signature of a new MOU for the period 1st July 2019 - 31 December 2022. A building block towards the ACFTA.

A small packet of cashew nuts in a supermarket sells at CHF 7 in a supermarket in Geneva. Yet, Sierra Leone exports raw cashew nuts to Vietnam. One can imagine what is the share of this retail price that goes to the small holder farmer. Hence the importance of value addition.

Africa needs to accelerate its productive transformation to create quality jobs for the 29 million Africans reaching working age each year from now until 2030. Quality jobs remain an exception for Africa’s youth and women.

African productive transformation is not spreading, especially where needed in employmentintensive sectors. The Africa-to-Asia labour productivity ratio has decreased from 67% in 2000 to 50% today. Africa’s production is not yet meeting the domestic demand.

African tech start-ups raised a record USD 1.2 billion in equity in 2018 compared to USD 560 million in 2017.

Africa's GDP has grown by 4.6% annually since 2000. Its domestic demand accounts for 69% of this growth performance and has shifted towards more processed goods. The ACFTA raises new hopes of creating a pan-African market for the continent's industrialization.
