🧬Can whole genome analysis help save yellow eyed penguins? 🐧 In a new paper in @NatureEcoEvo authors sequenced 249 genomes from one of the world’s rarest penguin species. The samples came from mainland New Zealand, Enderby and Campbell Islands. The result was unexpected. These penguins are not just a northern and a southern group. They form three genetically distinct lineages with almost no gene flow between them. The northern lineage split from the southern ones not after humans arrived but much earlier around 5–16 thousand years ago. Since 2019 northern chicks have been hit by a deadly respiratory distress syndrome. The virus linked to the disease is also found in southern penguins but they do not show the same severe disease So the story is probably not just about the virus. It may also be about genetic susceptibility and how different populations respond to infection. The GWAS found candidate regions near genes involved in cell transport membranes and inflammation. The worrying part is that the northern population is down to around 115 breeding pairs. It also shows lower genetic diversity and more inbreeding. This matters for conservation. Simply moving southern penguins north may not be the right fix. These lineages split long ago and may have adapted in different ways. nature.com/articles/s4155… #penguin #GWAS #conservation #PopulationGenetics #adaptation #virus
