You give a loyalist (or a problematic one) a fancy title and position to reward them, keep their network happy, and quietly sideline the risk — all while they look important on paper. Perfect current example: Cindy McCain.

So now everyone else is finally catching up to what I (and many who actually know how cabinets and Exec Office really works) have been saying since 2020: a lot of these high-profile appointments are either placeholders waiting for the right moment… or classic “kicked upstairs” moves.

Politics runs on incentives and relationships, not just ideology. Understanding these moves helps you see past the headlines.

This isn’t unique to one side or one person. Both parties do it constantly. It’s how politics manages coalitions: reward the helpers, contain the headaches, keep the tent together. Next time you see a controversial loyalist get a vague “advisory” title, you’ll know what’s probably happening. Not always malice — sometimes just smart damage control in a messy game.

Perfect recent example: General Michael Flynn. Early Trump supporter in 2016 → got the real job of National Security Advisor… lasted only 24 days before it blew up. Years later, loyal voice for the base. In March 2025, Trump appointed him to the Board of Visitors at West Point. Sounds important, right? It’s advisory — they review academy stuff a few times a year. No command, no intel access, no policy power. Prestige without the keys to anything sensitive. Classic kick upstairs.

These roles are often called sinecures or ceremonial positions: -Advisory boards -Honorary commissions -“Special Envoy” or “Senior Counselor” with no staff/budget -Ambassadorships to quiet places -Board of Visitors for military academies, etc. They involve meetings, ribbon-cuttings, speeches — but zero control over real policy or operations.

Why do this instead of just ousting them? -They helped you (campaign, supporters, influence ops, dirty work, etc.) -You owe them gratitude and don’t want to alienate their followers -But their style (shady tactics, controversies, loose cannon energy) is now a liability once you’re in power -Firing them risks leaks, infighting, or a new enemy who knows too much - A ceremonial role keeps them “on the team” publicly while neutralizing the risk Win-win for the boss. Cynical? Yes. Common? Extremely.

What does “kicking upstairs” mean? You promote someone to a higher-sounding position that looks impressive on paper… but has little or no actual authority. Big title -Prestige and a paycheck - But with NO Real decision-making power It’s a polite way to sideline them without creating enemies.
