@ARODMDPHD @DrDiGiorgio There is such a NEED for neurosurgeons in the community. This is due to multiple factors in no particular order: residency urges subspecialization and academics when the greatest need is in community general neurosurgery, retention of residents, too few spots for matching.

@DrDiGiorgio Being successful doesn’t necessarily mean in entering neurosurgery. Where do these unmatched students go ….prelim year purgatory and ultimately many failing the next year. Should we advise back up plans up front for some students when we’re reaching over 25% unmatched rates?

Neurosurgery with one of the lowest match rates of all specialties. Looking forward to understanding the data better so we can make sure people are successful in the match.

@kaylamellis_ Noone expects them to know everything but many are walking into ORs with no preparation and just expecting to learn on the job. Instead you should read about the surgery, understand the basic anatomy, go to surgery and give educated answer. Layers of skin is very basic.

@PinckardMd Yes.. after 4 years of medical school and approximately 5-7 years of residency.. this is an MS3 who hasn’t even done all of their clinical rotations yet.. lol you don’t just start out knowing everything. You learn. Unfortunately this student won’t feel comfortable doing so now.

I can’t tell you the number of times I got questions from attendings in the OR wrong because my anxiety would cause me to panic and in that moment I’d simply ✨forget✨.. can’t imagine seeing my attending tweet about my competence after 🙃😂
