🚨 Those summer nights chasing fireflies in the backyard... glowing like tiny stars you could hold in your hands. I remember jars full of them lighting up my room, the magic of childhood dreams flickering in the dark. Now scientists say we might be the last generation to see them like this. 😔💔 Who else has these core memories? Catching them, releasing them, feeling like the night belonged to you. Let’s protect what’s left of that wonder. Plant native flowers. Turn off outdoor lights. Bring the magic back for the next kids. 🌿✨

Fireflies are disappearing, & it is almost entirely a human-made disaster. Fireflies produce light through a two-step oxidative reaction. Oxyluciferin is excited to an unstable high-energy state, and as it returns to its ground state, it releases energy as the light we see in bioluminescence. Males use these light signals to attract females for mating. It is also their primary means of communication. And we are disrupting it. The biggest culprit is light pollution. Artificial lights at night interfere with their bioluminescent signals, reducing mating success and driving population collapse. When fireflies cannot find each other, they cannot reproduce. Habitat fragmentation is the second major driver. Marshes, wetlands, and moist forest edges-->the ecological niches fireflies depend on- are being steadily encroached upon for human development. Destroy the habitat, and the population follows. Third is pesticide contamination. Fireflies spend their larval stage inside the soil. When soil is contaminated with pesticides such as neonicotinoids, larvae are killed before they have a chance to emerge. The population collapses quietly, underground, where nobody notices. There are > 2,000 documented firefly species globally. Their presence reflects a healthy ecosystem. Their decline is a signal we should not ignore. We are quietly eliminating one of nature's most beautiful and important links, knowingly or not.

NEW: Michigan man starts bawling as he is sentenced to at least 30 years in prison for murdering his best friend on his wedding night. 24-year-old Michigan James Shirah killed his friend and groomsman Terry Taylor, 29, by deliberately hitting him with an SUV. Shirah and his wife, Savannah Collier, had exchanged vows just hours before the incident. Shirah had reportedly been drinking during the day and later got into an argument with Taylor. He then left and returned with the car, hitting Taylor. Collier pleaded guilty to one count of accessory after the fact. Shirah was sentenced to at least 30 years in prison for second-degree murder and has to pay $334 in fines.
