LOVE IS… FUNNY… A Thread by “F” Look, I “get” why everyone is so delighted by the announcement that Timmy marries Tootie in Butch Hartman’s headcanon and I have no desire to detract from that innocent joy. But let me give you something to think about… especially younger people or people who may be frustrated by the fact that they haven’t found “the one” yet… Popular stories have always gotten mileage out of the idea of two characters who knew each other as children growing up and falling in love… from Anne and Gilbert to Anakin and Padme’, it’s an appealing premise to have two people “meant” for each other be within a stone’s throw from birth. But real life seldom works like that, and - like the slightly autistic and incredibly romantic person I am - this notion caused me years of internal anxiety and no small number of heartbreaks. I’m not saying it NEVER happens, but - anecdotally - out of the dozens of married people I know, only two or three were “high school sweethearts” and NONE of them knew each other when they were kids. It’s a natural instinct for humans to gravitate to the familiar… I’m still acquainted with my two childhood crushes (only one is aware of it) and I still have warm feelings for them, but that’s nostalgia and familiarity… “love” of the “life-partner” variety means having to see that person at their worst… and I’m not talking about tussled hair or morning breath. People are complex and mysterious… they’re unpredictable and they evolve. You aren’t the same person now you were ten years ago and you won’t be exactly the same person you are now in ten years. I didn’t meet my wife until I was 35, and I had my heart broken a dozen before then. In retrospect, getting my heart broken was a good thing… it was necessary to get me to finally grow the hell up. I don’t wish heartbreak on anybody, and if you’re with your childhood sweetheart right now I wish you nothing but joy and happiness. But if love eludes you and romance seems impossible, please remember that the “Hollywood” version of “love” is intentionally simplistic and almost always the stuff of pure fantasy. Love comes in different forms… that’s how it’s supposed to be. Don’t assume you know what it’ll look like when you see it, and DON’T assume it’ll resemble anything like a kid’s cartoon!
