The science here is wilder than the tweet lets on. The phenomenon is called fetal microchimerism. During pregnancy, fetal cells cross the placenta into the mother’s bloodstream starting at 6 weeks gestation. About 1 to 2 cells per milliliter. Most get cleared by the immune system after birth. Some don’t. They find niches in the bone marrow and set up permanent residence. In 1996, Tufts geneticist Diana Bianchi found male fetal cells in a mother’s blood 27 years after she gave birth to her last son. Living, functioning cells that had integrated into her tissues nearly three decades earlier. Researchers have since found fetal cells embedded in the mother’s liver, kidneys, skin, lungs, heart, and brain. In over 60% of deceased women’s brains examined in one study, Y-chromosome cells from male pregnancies were present across multiple brain regions, differentiated into what appeared to be normal neurons. The cells respond to injury. In a 2012 Circulation Research study, when researchers induced cardiac damage in pregnant mice, fetal cells selectively migrated to the heart and transformed into functional cardiomyocytes, smooth muscle cells, and endothelial cells. 40% of the fetal cells began forming vascular tubes. The isolated cardiomyocytes could beat in sync with neighboring heart cells. This might explain cardiology’s most puzzling observation: peripartum cardiomyopathy has a 50% spontaneous recovery rate, the highest of any heart failure type. Nobody could explain why. The fetal cells may be running a repair mission. The evolutionary logic is clean. The fetus has a vested interest in keeping its mother alive. These cells function as a biological insurance policy: maintain the host, extend the caregiving window, increase offspring survival. But it cuts both ways. In a Fred Hutch study, women with rheumatoid arthritis had fetal chimeric cells at 53% prevalence versus 6% in healthy women. Fetal microchimerism is also linked to higher rates of scleroderma and thyroid disorders. The same cells that repair tissue may trigger the immune system to attack it. So “a child stays in a mother’s body forever” is literally true. Every pregnancy leaves behind a population of genetically distinct cells that embed in the mother’s organs, persist for decades, possibly repair her tissue, possibly trigger autoimmune responses. The mother becomes a chimera: one organism, two genomes. The metaphor is nice. The biology is stranger.

The mechanism here is what makes this study matter. When you load a muscle under resistance, contracting tissue releases lactate into the bloodstream. That lactate crosses the blood-brain barrier via monocarboxylate transporters and triggers BDNF expression in the hippocampus. Simultaneously, resistance training elevates IGF-1 more than aerobic exercise does, and IGF-1 upregulates BDNF gene expression in the brain independently. So you get a dual pathway: peripheral BDNF from muscle stress plus centrally-driven BDNF from IGF-1 signaling. Both converge on TrkB receptors, increasing synaptic density and strengthening connectivity between prefrontal networks. That’s exactly what this LISA trial found. 309 participants, ages 62-70, randomized to heavy resistance, moderate resistance, or no exercise. Both training groups showed increased prefrontal functional connectivity on fMRI and brain age reductions of 1.4-2.3 years. The non-exercise group showed nothing. The prefrontal finding matters because that’s where executive function lives. Planning, impulse control, working memory. The region that degrades fastest in normal aging is the one most responsive to resistance loading. And here’s the part Rhonda flagged that deserves more attention: training stopped after 12 months, but the brain age effects persisted at the 2-year follow-up. That suggests structural remodeling, not just transient neurochemical elevation. You’re changing the wiring, not just temporarily flooding the system with growth factors. Three sessions per week. Compound movements. Progressive overload. The protocol is simple. The neuroscience says your brain responds to the same signal your muscles do.
Dr. Rhonda Patrick@foundmyfitness

Lifting weights makes your brain look younger. One year of either heavy- or moderate-intensity strength training reduced older adults' estimated brain age by 1.4-2.3 years on average and enhanced functional connectivity between brain networks. What I find remarkable is, while the training lasted only one year, the effects on the brain were still noticeable at the two-year follow up. So many benefits of going to the gym, and not just for your muscles.

Wait, so the founder of Anthropic is "Amodei," as in "loves god"? And he leads Anthropic, meaning "human-centered," which is being used in military strikes? And the creator of ChatGPT is "Altman," as in "an alternative to humans"? And he leads OpenAI, which is completely closed? And then there's "Gemini," meaning "two-faced," from a company that promised to do no evil? And the whole global AI arms race is being driven by people who claimed to be worried about AGI taking over the world? Either the universe is an extremely cliché writer, or has a brilliant sense of humor

This is a really astonishing claim: Students in Mississippi & Louisiana score higher on reading tests than students in California & New York despite spending way less money per pupil and having higher child poverty rates. Decided to double check the data because, if true, this should be alarming for blue state leaders. And yup, it checks out. Reading performance (NAEP 2024, Grade 4 reading, average scale score): Mississippi: 219 Louisiana: 216 New York: 215 California: 212 Child poverty (SAIPE; “estimated percent of people age 0–17 in poverty,” 2023): Louisiana: 25.2% Mississippi: 24.3% New York: 18.6% California: 15.0% Per-pupil spending (public K–12 “current expenditures per pupil,” FY2023, inflation-adjusted to FY2023 dollars) New York: $29,588 California: $18,568 Louisiana: $14,822 Mississippi: $12,238 It should be unacceptable to spend that much more taxpayer money while delivering worse results for students.

BREAKING: Leading Attorney John Manly alleges an “epidemic of sexual abuse” against minors in California Public Schools by teachers, coaches, and other school employees. Manly exclusively tells Straight to the Point that his firm has uncovered over 350 cases of alleged sexual abuse in California classrooms alone and believes there to be “many more” statewide. “The main issue is that there is an epidemic of sexual abuse in the state by teachers, by coaches, and by other school employees.” “Our firm alone has discovered over 350 or 360 perpetrators.” “We believe there's many, many more. We know there's many more because we certainly don't have all of the cases." @thelatmg @latimesstudios_

SPECIAL INVESTIGATION: Top Attorney Claims “Epidemic of Sexual Abuse” in California Public Schools by Teachers, Coaches, or School Employees And Reveals That New Data Estimates 17% of Students Nationwide Will Face Sexual Misconduct During Their Public Education This week on Straight to the Point I sat down with a leading Attorney John Manly, who represented victims of USA Olympic Gymnastics team doctor Larry Nassar. Manly alleges that powerful teachers unions and failures in mandatory reporting requirements are enabling widespread sexual abuse by “passing the trash,” a practice in which he says problematic teachers are quietly reassigned after allegations rather than being fired and prosecuted. Email chain with Harry Fisch (urologist) thanking Epstein for inviting him to a dinner or event with Woody Allen. Woody Allen, Hollywood director, is married to Soon-Yi Previn, the adopted daughter of his former long-term partner, actress Mia Farrow Fisch gushes Woody was “absolutely brilliant” at 81, sharp and funny. His favorite part? Woody made a joke about a woman giving herself an abortion with a wire hanger.

Epstein emailed Ghislaine Maxwell with a plan to make Virginia Giuffre (one of Epstein's most known victims) look like a liar. He wanted to offer money to her friends or family if they said her stories were fake. He brought up the claim about Stephen Hawking being at some “underage orgy” in the Virgin Islands and said the Clinton dinner could help prove it didn’t happen. Maxwell told him it was a really bad idea. Epstein called her lawyer an idiot and said it was just a joke.
