@KellyMatshall @weepep @psni He is missing the point entirely, it doesn’t matter the religion of who arrests or tries you, the arrest and verdict to send you to prison means you have broke the law, regardless of which constitutional jurisdiction you live in

In the north of Ireland you are arrested by a protestant police @Psni and if convicted then you are incarcerated by an overwhelmingly protestant prison service. Catholics in Ireland are still under a sectarian judicial system under protestant semi British rule

It is my distinct honor and great privilege to invite His Majesty King Charles III, The King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, to address a Joint Meeting of Congress. Our two nations share one of the most consequential partnerships in history, and together we will mark the historic milestone of America’s 250th year of independence.

Today I’m announcing the @Conservatives National Pothole Patrol. That’s a fleet of road-repairing machines which could be deployed directly to fix potholes. To get Britain working again, we have to fix Britain’s roads. And only the Conservatives will get it done.

𝐈 𝐩𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐍𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐧 𝐈𝐫𝐞𝐥𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐨 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐭 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬𝐧’𝐭 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐛𝐚𝐜𝐤. Northern Ireland Nationalism permanently sits in a state of unsettled and ironic contradiction. It is built on a set of ideas that struggle to coexist with one another, yet are rarely examined too closely. The result is a politics that can feel restless, pulled apart between aspiration and reality. One such contradiction flows directly from the mistaken assumption that their political centre of gravity lies not in London, or even in Belfast, but in Dublin. Central to the Nationalist manifesto is a misplaced sense of belonging to the Republic of Ireland, a foreign state that in practical terms, barely notices they exist. To the Republic, Northern Ireland nationalism is largely peripheral. A small and distant political community, misunderstood, loosely engaged with, and ultimately outside of its interest and control. Some Southerners go as far to denounce just how ‘Irish’ Northern Ireland nationalists really are, believing them to be a lesser, diluted and diminished version of the tribe. Emma De Souza noted as much when she wrote that “to deny there are those [from the Republic of Ireland] who see people in the North as less Irish is to deny reality.” A similar attitude could be found when Northern Ireland comedian, Paddy Keilty, took over the lead presenter role for The Late Late Show on RTE back in 2023. Scandal surrounding Keilty’s predecessor meant most within the public were optimistic about his appointment, but a notable number considered him unfit for the role because of his British background. Comments on social media included, “A disgrace. It should have gone to a good Free Stater.” Another person posted, “Won’t watch that crap! Now a northerner!! No thanks.” Three years on, the show is suffering from a major decline in viewership. More common than outright hostility, however, is something quieter and more widespread: indifference. Northern Ireland simply does not occupy a central place in the Republic’s political life. It surfaces occasionally, during moments of complaint or constitutional debate, but never as a sustained priority. As an Ulster Loyalist, of course, I wouldn’t have it any other way. The Republic of Ireland is a foreign state, and while an academic interest in Irish affairs is one thing, that which remains politically important, resides entirely within the United Kingdom. Some Northern Ireland Nationalists however like to pretend that the Republic is desperately enamoured with our part of the island. On the matter of Irish unity, they imagine the Republic as a gushing groom, waiting patiently at the altar for Northern Ireland to walk down the aisle. In truth, there is no such wedding. It hasn’t even been cancelled because it was never proposed in the first place, except in the minds of some Northern Ireland Nationalists. ‘The Groom’ isn’t a groom at all, and is far more interested in his own affairs than that of marrying a stranger. Belfast-born former President Mary McAleese is often cited as an example of cross-border harmony, and President Catherine Connolly has recently appointed a handful of figures from Northern Ireland to her State Council. But these token gestures are hollow and remain the exception rather than the rule. In over a century of the Dáil, only a tiny handful of TDs, no more than two or three, have actually been born in Northern Ireland. Even in the Senate, where representatives are selected instead of elected, still only half a dozen or so have come from Northern Ireland. Better still, Northern Ireland born ex-Sinn Fein MLA, Michelle Guldernew, stood for election to Dail in 2024. She was a favourite to win the seat, until she fell short of expectations and the result left another Northerner out in the cold.

Despite all the talk of a Border Poll, the reality is that NI will remain within the UK for the foreseeable future. More people are pro-Union than vote unionist. An opportunity for outreach & positivity to win converts to reinforce that outcome @News_Letter

It's the fault of the Labour Government making changes to the funding over the heads of the opposition of the Executive. The very Labour Government the SDLP sit with on the government benches in Westminster, and said they would be able to influence.
