@EdwardJDavey, you have misread the argument so comprehensively that one has to wonder whether it is deliberate. Nobody is objecting to freedom of worship. Nick Timothy did not say Muslims should not be allowed to pray. He said mass ritual prayer in a shared national civic space is an act of domination, and cited the former extremist turned scholar Ed Husain, who has spent his career documenting exactly this phenomenon. The Adhan, the call to prayer, declares there is no god but Allah and Muhammad is his messenger. That is by definition a theological repudiation of every other faith. When projected into Trafalgar Square, a national memorial to British sovereignty and independence, it is not equivalent to a celebration. It is a declaration. The distinction is theological, not political, and it is precise. You invoke freedom of worship as though Timothy had called for mosques to be closed. He did not. You invoke British values as though observing that the domination of public spaces is straight from the Islamist playbook is somehow un-British. It is not. It is documented, sourced and supported by scholars who have spent decades inside Islamist movements. This week, thousands of people gathered on the Embankment chanting death to America and death to Israel. Bobby Vylan led chants of death death death to the IDF, cleared by the CPS last year and back on a London stage doing it again. The Islamic Human Rights Commission, named in a Lords report as part of Iran's soft power network in Britain, addressed the crowd. Thirty six Labour MPs wrote to the Parliamentary Commissioner demanding the investigation of a man for pointing out what every serious student of Islamism already knows. The Attorney General deployed his Jewish identity to defend a declaration that, by its own theological logic, repudiates Judaism. And your contribution to all of it is a tweet accusing people who raise these questions of stoking fear, hatred and division. You lead a party that voted consistently to keep Britain in the European Union against the democratic will of the British people. A party that has positioned itself as the political home of progressive appeasement, that has never met an Islamist grievance it would not accommodate, and whose response to every act of cultural intimidation is to accuse those who name it of bigotry. The Liberal Democrats have no record of defending British values under pressure. They have a record of redefining British values to mean whatever is least likely to cause offence to the most vocal pressure group in the room. Freedom of worship is indeed a fundamental British value. So is freedom of speech. So is the freedom to observe, without being accused of racism, that a theological declaration of exclusive truth projected into a national monument is not the same as lighting a menorah or performing a Passion play. Nick Timothy exercised that freedom. The full weight of the parliamentary and political establishment descended on him within twenty four hours. That is the state of British politics today, Ed. And you are part of the problem, not the solution. "Nick Timothy didn't say Muslims shouldn't be allowed to pray. He said mass ritual prayer in a shared national civic space is an act of domination, and cited the former extremist turned scholar Ed Husain, who has spent his career documenting exactly this phenomenon."

Why is it that if a Muslim feels unsafe because of Brits, that's because we’re racist, but if Brits feel unsafe because of Muslims, that's also because we’re racist? Muslims took over Trafalgar Square for public prayer with Sadiq Khan, London's mayor. This made a lot of Brits feel uneasy, and Tory MP Nick Timothy voiced his concern that it's a public display of dominance. This was predictably condemned as racist and Islamophobic, but these accusations are starting to wear a bit thin. While other religions do have public prayer, there aren't 40,000 Amish guys on terror watch lists, and we don't have an issue with Presbyterian grooming gangs. And as for "diversity" - where were the gays? The transgenders? Looking at the history of countries colonised by Islam, such as Spain (off whose coast the Battle of Trafalgar took place), it is worth remembering that Islam is a bit more than a religion. It’s a form of societal and political organisation as well.

The Free Speech Union is bringing a judicial review against Communities Secretary Steve Reed, challenging his decision to impose an official definition of ‘anti-Muslim hostility’ (Islamophobia). This is a Muslim blasphemy law by the back door, which will silence legitimate criticism of Islam and prevent people from speaking out on issues such as the grooming gangs scandal. The proposed definition is vague and subjective, and liable to be weaponised to shut down lawful debate about Islam, Muslims, and Islamic practices and history. Adopting such a definition — let alone appointing an Islamophobia ‘Tsar’ — breaches the ‘occupying the field’ doctrine in public law. Our lawyers have sent a Pre-Action Protocol letter setting out why the definition is unlawful, and have asked the Government to pause both its rollout and the appointment of the ‘Tsar’ until the case is resolved. Judicial reviews against Secretaries of State are costly, but this is a fight we must win. Blasphemy laws were abolished by Parliament in 2008 — let’s keep it that way. Too many are too polite to say this. But mass ritual prayer in public places is an act of domination. The adhan - which declares there is no god but allah and Muhammad is his messenger - is, when called in a public place, a declaration of domination. Perform these rituals in mosques if you wish. But they are not welcome in our public places and shared institutions. And given their explicit repudiation of Christianity they certainly do not belong in our churches and cathedrals. I am not suggesting everybody at Trafalgar Square last night is an Islamist. But the domination of public places is straight from the Islamist playbook. Trafalgar Square belongs to all of us. It is a national memorial to our independence and our salvation. Last night was not like a televised football match or a St Patrick’s Day celebration. It was an act of domination and therefore division. It shouldn’t happen again.

“A definition of anti-Muslim hostility is a key step towards a blasphemy law. It is a two-tier policy — the enemy of equality and of community cohesion — in its purest form”, says Baroness Falkner. Just 45 minutes after the Communities Secretary published the Government’s definition of “anti-Muslim hostility”, the first politician — Independent pro-Gaza MP Iqbal Mohamed — sought to weaponise it to silence speech he doesn’t like. Iqbal Mohamed MP asked Communities Secretary Steve Reed how the new definition of Islamophobia would be applied to the “escalating hostility” of what MPs say about Muslims in the House of Commons and “what sanctions” would be used against those who fall foul of what he deems acceptable. The Secretary of State said nothing to slap down this blatant attempt to censor legitimate debate and criticism of religion by elected officials. In fact, he went on to say Mohamed was “right to point to the huge concern we should all share about the unacceptable level of hostility and abuse directed at Muslims”. The Free Speech Union warned this would become a Muslim blasphemy law via the back door. Read more below 👇

Islam is not a race. Islam is a religion. Islam is a choice. Outlawing criticism of Islam is outlawing free speech.

The Telegraph reports certain schools are being warned that children’s drawings could be considered 'blasphemous' under Islamic law. They're also told music and dance classes could be 'contrary' to the teachings of Islam. I am absolutely sick of this, to be entirely honest.

The Government’s official definition of Islamophobia — now repackaged as “anti-Muslim hostility” — is a threat to free speech. It risks silencing legitimate criticism of the religion of Islam, its practices and its history. Racialising the definition will further endanger free speech, given the toxicity surrounding accusations of racism. General Secretary of the Free Speech Union, Lord Young, has said that the definition is unnecessary because it is already a criminal offence to stir up religious hatred, and unlawful for employers or service providers to discriminate against people on the basis of religion or belief. “Granting Muslims additional protections not extended to people of other faiths will have the effect of increasing anti-Muslim hostility, not reducing it.” Read more below 👇

📣🚨 The Free Speech Union is mounting a legal challenge against the Government over its official definition of Islamophobia — now repackaged as 'anti-Muslim hatred' — and its appointment of a new 'tsar' to punish people who fall foul of it. This amounts to a Muslim blasphemy law via the back door. The definition is vague and subjective, and will be weaponised to silence legitimate criticism and debate about Islam, Muslims, and Islamic practices and history. The FSU’s General Secretary, Lord Young of Acton, said: “This is the most serious threat to free speech the Government has come up with so far — the only area in which it’s achieving any success. “If we don’t win this fight, tens of thousands of people a year could lose their jobs at the say-so of a Labour-appointed ‘tsar’. It’s dystopian.” Public bodies will adopt this definition — despite it being non-statutory — with the same zeal the police have shown in investigating and recording non-crime hate incidents (NCHIs). It is predicted by one of the drafters of the definition that it could lead to around 20,000 reports of 'anti-Muslim hostility' a year. At present, the number of recorded anti-Muslim hate crimes is around 4,000. In a free society, no religion should be shielded from legitimate criticism. This proposal places one faith above the rest. The Free Speech Union is bringing a legal challenge on two grounds. First, the definition relies on nebulous, legally undefined terms such as “negative and prejudicial stereotyping of Muslims”, making it incoherent and irrational — and ripe for weaponisation. Second, adopting such a definition cuts across legislation already enacted by Parliament and therefore breaches the public law principle known as “occupying the field”. Under this established public law doctrine, new regulations, put in place by ministers, must not replace existing legislation. It is constitutionally unlawful. In this case, the body responsible for protecting Muslims from discrimination is the Equality and Human Rights Commission, not an anti-Muslim hostility 'tsar'. Parliament voted to abolish blasphemy laws 18 years ago. We can't let this Government resurrect them via the back door. This is one of the biggest battles the Free Speech Union has ever taken on in its six years — and we need your help. Judicial reviews are expensive, but this is a fight we felt we had to take on. We are set to get an Islamophobia tsar and an official definition of Islamophobia — now repackaged as “anti-Muslim hostility” as part of the Government’s new social cohesion strategy. While the leaked draft shows that “racialisation” will not be included, it will include “pre-judicial stereotyping” as a form of anti-Muslim hate. In reality, the Government is using this definition as a vehicle to introduce a Muslim blasphemy law — 18 years after Parliament voted to abolish blasphemy laws. The official definition will silence legitimate criticism of Islam and its practices. It will deter public officials and news outlets from speaking out about issues such as the grooming gangs scandal and Islamist extremism. The Free Speech Union’s recent investigative briefing exposed that all five members of the working group tasked by Angela Rayner with drafting the definition have troubling links to Islamist organisations. So, with that in mind: who will be the Islamophobia Tsar? The Free Speech Union remains firmly opposed to the reintroduction of blasphemy laws by the back door. Read more below 👇
