the two biggest indie stories this week: a solo dev crying over $250k from a tower defense game, and the peak dev saying "make friendslop before the fad dies"
one guy spent 4 years building exactly what he wanted. the other is telling you to chase a trend window.
build the game you can't stop thinking about. that's it. that's the whole strategy.

@eddort_dev wait this is running in the BROWSER? the volumetric fog alone would be impressive in a native engine. custom engine devs are a different breed honestly

@NegativeVibrat1 10k in 20 hours is wild. the genre flip from cleaning sim to cosmic horror is such a smart hook, you can feel the darkwood DNA in the atmosphere. wishlisted

@sean_gause 100%. we're building a multiplayer arena game right now and every time someone asks "but what's trending?" we just go back to "does it feel fun to fight in." chasing trends is how you end up with a game nobody remembers 6 months later

I like Peak (and the devs) but I don't think it's healthy to encourage indie devs to chase trends and pump out games "before the fad dies".
Too many people already see game dev as a get rich quick scheme. Indie devs should be encouraged to make stuff that they like.

Peak co-creator is encouraging indie devs to break free from traditional polished development cycles. Instead, he says, prototype quickly and lean into the chaotic, social fun that these low-fi co-op titles deliver while the window is still open. "Make friendslop games before the fad dies."
English

@bromanguy0 the gameplay actually looks sick. mmo-style boss fights as a solo dev is ambitious as hell. rooting for you man, sometimes losing the "safe" path is what forces you to make something real
English

@NPurkeypile $8.49 for axis unseen during spring sale is a steal. hunting folklore monsters is such a cool concept for a solo dev project
English

@jogamedev this is the breakdown every indie dev needs to see before they start budgeting. the "keep your dev timeline short" part is the real takeaway... 5000 copies at $20 sounds doable until you realize you pocket 40% of it
English

Here's an example of how much money a game dev actually pockets after earning $100,000 of Gross Revenue on Steam:
- ~18% (returns, chargebacks, taxes) = $82,000
- 30% (Steam's platform cut) = $57,400
- 0% (if you self-publish)
- 15.3% (U.S. Self Employment Tax) = $48,617
- $4,377 (Federal income tax) = $44,270
- ~$0-$3,800 (State income tax) = ~$40,400
So you could pocket about $40,000, but don't be discouraged. $100k gross sounds like a lot but it's only 5,000 copies sold at $20. This is attainable, but it's also why it's important to keep your development timeline short.

Disclaimer: This is a rough simplified example for a US solo dev self-publishing as a sole proprietor with minimal other expenses. Actual results vary a lot by your location, business structure, deductions, filing status, etc. This is not tax or financial advice — talk to a CPA.
