Nobody said a knife should be the first option.
But if you claim you have never picked up an object to defend yourself or create distance when you felt threatened, I would call that a lie.
The issue is not pretending force is never used. The issue is whether adults are teaching children to de-escalate, get away, and protect themselves when they cannot. You keep avoiding that part.

The police report says more than “they asked him to leave.”
It records Karmelo immediately saying:
“I was protecting myself.”
“He put his hands on me.”
“He put his hands on me, I told him not to.”
The report also includes witness descriptions that Austin grabbed or pushed before the stabbing.
So no, the record is not as simple as “he could have just walked away.” Adults and staff should de-escalate. Students putting hands on each other is exactly how situations explode.

Nobody is saying children should bring knives to school. The question is whether the adult advice given to Karmelo was safe or reckless. Should a teenager be told to submit to aggression, let someone put hands on him, and hope the aggressor stops?

Distant security footage has been released of Karmelo defending himself from Austin Metcalf attacking him. As you can see in the video, Karmelo was surrounded under the tent with no way to escape. As Austin was standing over Karmelo attacking him, Karmelo neutralized the threat using self defense, and Karmelo had to run UP the stairs to escape further danger because he was boxed in from running DOWN the stairs.
This is CLEARLY self defense

When a school resource officer confronted Anthony and radioed him in as a suspect, Anthony immediately responded on camera, saying, “I’m not alleged, I did it.” Anthony also told the officer that Metcalf had “put his hands on me” and claimed he had previously warned him not to.
