They had questions — real ones. “How do you fix stuff in the dark?” “Do you make a lot of money?” “Do you ever get zapped?” (Yes, once, and it’ll curl your hair.) When the bell rang, one boy hung back. Small kid, freckles, hoodie too big for him. He mumbled, “My uncle’s a plumber. People laugh at him ’cause he didn’t finish high school. But… he’s the only one in the family who can fix anything.” I looked that boy in the eye and said, “Kid, your uncle’s a hero. When your toilet overflows at midnight, Harvard ain’t sending anyone. A plumber is.” Here’s the thing nobody told me when I was young — the world doesn’t run without tradespeople. You can have all the engineers you want, but if nobody builds the house, wires the power, or lays the pipes, those blueprints just sit in a drawer. We’ve made it sound like trades are what you do if you can’t go to college, instead of a path you choose because you like working with your hands, solving problems, and seeing your work stand solid for decades. Four years after high school, some kids walk away with diplomas. Others walk away with zero debt, a union card, and a skill they can take anywhere in the world. And guess what? When your furnace dies in January, it’s not the diploma that saves you. A few weeks ago, that same freckled kid’s mom stopped me at the grocery store. She said, “You probably don’t remember, but you told my son trades are important. He’s shadowing his uncle this summer. First time I’ve seen him excited about anything in years.” That’s the part we forget — for some kids, knowing their path is respected changes everything. It’s not about “just” fixing wires or pipes. It’s about pride. Purpose. The kind that sticks with you long after the job’s done. So next time you meet a teenager, don’t just ask, “Where are you going to college?” Ask, “What’s your plan?” And if they say, “I’m learning to weld,” or “I’m starting an apprenticeship,” smile big and say, “That’s fantastic. We’re going to need you.” Because we will. More than ever. And when the lights go out, you’ll be glad they showed up.”

Chase Purpose. Not Things

I’m reading this at the moment. It’s fabulous. @NiallHarbison ‘s work with dogs in Thailand is incredible and inspiring and, I imagine, draining and heartbreaking. Do buy it if you can.

Not everybody who follows me will know Tina but those who do know just how special she was. A one of a kind. That hammock shot is Tina with about 30 minutes left to live as we listened to this song. We were both so happy and even though she was still alive I think after a life of neglect and abuse Tina was already in heaven. For me this is more than a book. It’s been 18 months of extreme effort to get her hospital up and running, over 60,000 dogs sterilized since she passed and endless dogs saved. I have to be truly honest and say I’m close to breaking point in terms of exhaustion and the mental effort that has gone in. After this book comes out in 20 days and I do about 3 weeks of promotion for it in UK / Ireland and USA I need to take a little rest to think about Tina and how far we’ve come in shaping her legacy to help other dogs. A pre-order would mean the absolute world. Somehow i dream of getting it to number one in the charts and looking up at her big face in an airport stand somewhere around the world. I still miss her but I talk to her every day. She’d be too modest to think a book is about her but i think she’d love it. 💛🎾 (1/2)

Storm Éowyn did a number on us 💔💔💔💔 We have no electricity, internet, phone coverage. This video was taken at 8am this morning, we had been up all night trying to do the best we could for the animals in our care, there’s nearly 180 animals in total on our main farm and 80 pigs on our My Lovely Pig Rescue farm, the rest are all in foster and and on our smaller farm in My Lovely Horse Rescue Cork…a very hectic night for all the humans, everyone exhausted today 💔 Shelters destroyed, roofs and tiles blown off and now struggling without electricity. It’s 6.33pm on Friday the 24th, we are praying it comes back on. We are filling buckets from our river and piling it up at stables.
