The land was bought by the council for just £1 in 1995 but residents have used and maintained it as part of their gardens for decades, building patios, sheds and greenhouses. The council now demands they either buy the land back at up to £140 per square metre or pay nearly £70 a month in rent, or face it being seized. Furious homeowners say they had no idea when they bought their properties and that solicitors' searches failed to flag the issue.
