This morning something happened in my house that really surprised me. I wanted to bath my little daughter because my wife was busy in the kitchen cooking. Just normal father duties, nothing serious. I carried my daughter and went to the bathroom. Suddenly my wife rushed out of the kitchen like there was an emergency. The way she ran, you would think someone shouted that a bomb was about to drop. She looked at me with very serious eyes and said I should stop immediately. According to her, I have no right to bath our female child and she had warned me about it before. She even said this would be the last warning and that I wouldn’t like what would happen if I tried it again. Honestly, I just stood there confused, looking like a complete fool because I have never heard of any law in Nigeria that says a father cannot bath his own daughter. Now I’m really wondering… Is there actually any rule or cultural belief that says a father shouldn’t bath his daughter? Or is this just something some families believe in? Because in my mind, taking care of your child boy or girl is part of being a parent. I’m genuinely asking: Fathers here, have you ever bathed your daughter before? Mothers, do you think it’s wrong? Before i left Nigeria, my boyfriend sold his car, his land, and emptied his savings to pay for my Master's degree in the UK. The plan was simple: I settle down, get a job, and file for him as a dependent. We were going to build a life in Birmingham away from the stress of Lagos. I arrived in the UK and reality hit me. It was cold, lonely, and hard. Then I met a guy. He was already a citizen, had a house, had papers. He offered me stability that my boyfriend back home couldn't. It started with late-night study sessions, then moving in to save rent. Six months later, I was pregnant for him. I ghosted my boyfriend in Nigeria. I blocked him everywhere. I heard from a mutual friend that he almost ran mad. He is still in debt paying off the loans he took for my flight ticket. Though i feel bad, but it's what it's. Things just didn't go as planned.
