@GrumpyOldGit5 @mr_james_c @mttjon No. But that’s like saying “phones are not a new idea” 25 years ago… when if you showed someone an iPhone in 2000, they’d think it’s from another planet. You’re a moron.

Renewables in the UK serve the same purpose as eye-watering welfare spending: They exist to serve the emotional needs of people who are incapable of understanding second and third order effects.

@mr_james_c @mttjon @GrumpyOldGit5 I’m not against nuclear. You’ve got Rolls Royce building incredible SMR’s that will be in operation within a decade. You seem to think energy tech stands still. It’s nonsense.

@mttjon @GrumpyOldGit5 @mr_james_c I’ve literally mentioned energy security being a main driver… which is self reliance. I’m not naive enough to think any major economy will switch out of selfless care for the environment.

@GrumpyOldGit5 @mr_james_c No, Government can absolutely coerce things to incentivise behaviour that pays off in the long term. Absolute nonsense argument from you. Look at what China are doing. And they aren’t investing in green energy because they give a shit about climate change.

@PoIiticsForMe @mr_james_c No it isn’t. We’ve transitioned before, the market and human innovation is all it needs. If it was inevitable it wouldn’t need to be coerced by government

@NemoSalus @mr_james_c Don’t need to read a load of bullshit. Fossil fuels are a dwindling finite resource so the switch to renewables and nuclear will eventually happen due to it being cheaper and essential for energy security.

@thebuckhurstboy I replied to Heidi and mentioned her by name. Clearly indicating that I was referring to her and her comment. You either don’t know how “X” / Twitter works, or you’re an absolute imbecile.

Labour rightly expelled Ms Mendick over alleged antisemitism, so why is the @TheGreenParty's Zoe Garbett endorsing her AND running on a joint platform? If they had any principles they would end any association with these candidates immediately. dailymail.co.uk/news/article-1…

@clarity_chaser I’ve not mentioned climate change as a reason for net-zero. You have multiple times in opposition. That’s your ideology showing. I’m pragmatic. You think China are going big on green energy because they give a shit about climate change? Of course not. It’s for economic reasons.

@PoIiticsForMe Then argue it on cost and security, not moral posturing. If net zero is economically rational, defend the actual policies on price, reliability, storage, grid costs and import dependence. The UK's standalone emissions cuts still have negligible climate effect.

Efficiency as a left-wing virtue - as it should be. Verdant's report advocates for UK government-wide Chief Savings Officer, along the lines Mamdani describes here: to promote effective spending and gaurd against negligent austerity. Report here: verdantthinking.org/publications/w…

Government must deliver for working people—and every dollar in our budget should work as hard as they do. That’s why I directed every agency to cut waste and help close our budget gap. Here’s some of what we found.

@clarity_chaser This is your problem. Your ideological position against green energy supporters who preach climate change blinds you to the fact that actually… energy security and cost are the key factors that will drive the inevitable net-zero push.

@PoIiticsForMe If your claim is economic rationality, then defend specific policies on cost, reliability and security. Don't pretend the UK’s own emissions cuts have a meaningful standalone climate effect, because they don't.

@clarity_chaser And you miss the entire point that future fossil fuel use will become economically irrational for almost everything… with maybe a few exceptions like aviation. Also irrational for energy security which will become more important.

@PoIiticsForMe @meadwaj @AaronBastani The UK could go to zero tomorrow and the climate impact would be negligible. The real question is whether the policy is economically rational, not whether it signals virtue.

@clarity_chaser @meadwaj @AaronBastani Shouldn’t everyone support net zero? You’d think even a fossil fuels advocate should recognise that it’s a dwindling finite resource that inevitably needs to be replaced by renewables and/or nuclear?

@riversorare @AaronBastani But that means Israel having a right to exist is, or anywhere, is based purely off the population’s sentiment at the current time. So the belief in self determination is relevant but anything else isn’t. Israel could lose the right to exist if opinion changed.

This is specious. Saying Israel has a right to exist (which in my view it clearly now does even though its orginal creation may well have been a mistake or wrong) - is really just a shorthand for saying rhe Israelis now living there have a right to self determination, which as you concede they do. If they have a right to self determination, Israel has a right to exist. Of course this applies equally to the Palestinians and given the unlikelihood of them livinf peacefully in the same state in the near future that means some sort of two state solution will be necessary.

It’s good Carlson pushed back on this. No country has a ‘right to exist’. People have a right to self determination, certainly (including Palestinians). We hear this framing constantly from the media, and only ever about one country.
