Armagh GAA Mourns the Passing of Dr Pat O’Neill
Armagh GAA learned with great sadness of the passing of Dr Pat O’Neill, Keady, at the age of 97. A towering figure in the history of Gaelic football in Ulster, Pat’s contribution to our county — and to the game itself — was quite simply extraordinary.
As a student at St Patrick’s College, Armagh, he was part of a golden era that delivered three MacRory Cup titles in succession in 1944, 1945 and 1946, captaining the side in that final year. That same team then made history by becoming the first-ever winners of the Hogan Cup, defeating St Jarlath’s, Tuam, and writing their names permanently into the annals of the GAA.
With Armagh, Pat captained the county to the Ulster Senior Football Championship in 1950 — ending a 48-year wait and breaking a sequence of 16 finals without a title. Three years later, lining out at centre half-back, he was a key figure as Armagh reached their first ever All-Ireland Senior Football Final in 1953.
After relocating to Omagh, Pat joined St Enda’s and won three successive Tyrone Senior Championship titles from 1952 to 1954 — the first club in the county to achieve that feat — before later winning Ulster medals with the Tyrone county team in 1956 and 1957.
He was, in every sense, a man of two counties who gave generously to both.
Our deepest sympathies go to his daughters Patricia, Fiona, Clare, Una, Ciara, Maeve and Sinead, to his wider family, his many friends, colleagues and patients, and to the Gaels of Armagh and Omagh.
I measc Naomh na hÉireann agus Laochra na nGael go raibh sé.
May he rest among the Saints of Ireland and the Heroes of the Gael.

A group of schoolkids from Co Armaghhave gone viral after treating commuters on the London Underground to some traditional music ahead of St Patrick’s Day.
The pupils from St Paul’s High School in Bessbrook were in London for a series of events to celebrate Ireland’s patron saint, including taking part in the city’s parade and performing at the Houses of Parliament.

Lá Fhéile Pádraig sona daoibh! ☘️
I had the best of company in London for St. Patrick’s Day!
Students from St. Paul’s, Bessbrook, took part in London’s parade & showcased their immense talent in Parliament.
It was a truly unique occasion to hear traditional Irish folk music, songs as Gaeilge & see Irish dancing in Westminster.
Also great to have such an informed & wide-ranging political discussion with the squad.
The students & staff were brilliant & are powerful ambassadors for their school, families & community. ☘️🎻🎶
