It's Memorial Day. A bittersweet one for me. The man that helped raise my Dad, a WWII veteran by the name of Brice Wilson, passed away late last year. I got my middle name from him. I've never known a more honorable man. Today, as we remember the men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice to serve our great country and protect the freedoms we get to enjoy every day, may we keep their memory on our hearts today. Let's love, respect, and take care of each other a little bit more. Conduct yourselves in a way that honors the selfless people they chose to be. If you consult my handy dandy graphic, I have summarized your forecast for today by region. A little bit more moisture and instability present today. As a result, we'll see scattered showers and thunderstorms develop with daytime heating. Moving generally from north to south. Developing in the mountains and on the western slope by noon-1pm. Along and east of the continental divide and up onto the I-80 corridor, Nebrasky, and western Kansas by 2-4pm. The main risks will be gusty winds and lightning. Stronger cells could contain brief heavy downpours and small hail. On the far eastern plains, along a pseudo-dry line, a few strong/severe storms are possible with all modes of severe weather possible, but the main ones will be damaging winds and large hail. Warmest day of the week is today. Then we'll taper things off to a mix of 70s and 80s including the western slope and obviously a bit cooler as you climb in elevation. I do expect an active weather pattern to remain in place for the majority of the week and into the weekend, but obviously the drama is in the details. Each day will not be an exact carbon copy of the last; so be el diligento lol and check in with me each mernin for your forecast update. Then, as needed, I'll nowcast throughout the day on the book of faces giving you updates in real time so that there aren't any surprises, mmkay? Today the Map is 6 years old..quite the milestone I never imagined. The foundational basis (all Unidentified and Missing) is nearly complete. There are close to 35 thousand people placed either where they were found or last seen. It takes longer now to place them in their chronological position- nearly 6 minutes each. The Map is user friendly once you know how to use it, best opened in Chrome. There are nearly 2 dozen solves because of the map- that means resolution for those families. Florida is sending 120 solar-powered robot rabbits into the Everglades to find invasive Burmese pythons. The robots have heaters to mimic body temperature, motors for realistic movement, scent emitters, and AI cameras that alerts a snake-wrangler when a python approaches. They're placed in small pens, switched on and off remotely, and powered entirely by the Florida sun. Burmese pythons released by exotic-pet owners in the 1980s, plus a population dump when Hurricane Andrew destroyed a reptile breeding facility in 1992, have functionally cleared the Everglades of small mammals. Raccoon, opossum, and bobcat populations are down 87 to 99% in python-infested areas. A single python eats more than 100 animals and have up to 2,000 offspring over its lifetime. The problem isn't dispatching invasive pythons, it's finding them. They're nearly invisible in dense swamp vegetation. You can easily walk past one without seeing it. A predecessor trial using live rabbits as bait drew 22 pythons to 9 pens in 90 days. The robots are a scalable and humane version of a method that already works.
