Excited about our new paper showing we can distinguish Democrats from Republicans by their brain activity while making decisions about purchasing food, but not by their choices. #neuropolitics

I told Viktor Orbán that he is the useful idiot of Russia and China. He was not amused:

🧵Today’s college freshmen were in 4th grade when Donald Trump became president. They’ve only ever known US elections as an urgent crisis. For many of them, this means they process politics and civic engagement through a trauma lens. People who have a trauma response do not…

I'm very excited to announce that UCLA has formed the first Social & Affective Neuroscience (SAN) area of a Psych dept in the US. The new area will be Naomi Eisenberger, Carolyn Parkinson (@parkinsoncm), Jaime Castrellon (@jjfcastrellon) and myself. We will have a SAN Ph.D. major, a SAN colloquium series, and we will be hiring more SAN faculty soon (fingers crossed). Come join us! A big thank you to all of the other SAN-relevant and SAN-adjacent faculty who will be working with us at UCLA including Jen Silvers (@JASilvers), Adriana Galvan, Lucina Uddin (@LucinaUddin), David Clewett (@DavidClewett), Tiffany Ho, Katie Karlsgodt (@KatieKarlsgodt), Ian Krajbich (@KarjbichLab), Jaimie Krems (@JaimieKrems), Bridget Callaghan (@Dr_BCallaghan), Hongjing Lu, Andrew Fuligni, and Lara Ray. Also a big thanks to the @SANS_news community that provided us with survey data that helped us make the case that SAN deserved to be its own area. I’ll be sharing this data in a SCAN Tools of the Trade paper on how to create a SAN area in your own department. If we don’t start forming SAN-type areas of departments, we will start shrinking rather than growing as a field within the next 15 years. I’ll have lots more to say about this in the near future.

🧵 47 years after its publication, McKelvey’s chaos theorem is having it’s day in the House Republican Conference. The chaos social choice theory states that majority rule decisions in a two-dimensional space are unstable. Any point in the space can be reached 1/n

@noclador Visited the Tank Museum in Wareham, UK and couldn’t understand why older tanks were rifled and newer ones were smooth bore. Totally clear now, great thread! Wish this had been in the museum displays.

Our house in Trostyanets got hit by ru strike. Veranda dissapeared, the gates and fence as well, windows and door smashed. Occupieres looted the house. The update came after 2 month of trying to reach the neighbors. They are alive and they reported the news.

@MRymarenko I center the moral and emotional issues in my classes. In the brain, our emotional and moral capacity helps us to discern what is worthy of attention. When I’m teaching stats, I focus on translating those numbers into things we care about, the emotional and moral. You’ll do great!

@PolNeuro I hope so too, yet having personal experinece makes it surely more authentic and at the same time more challenging to stay within the lines of professional reflection. This is also why i found it a downside tgat academic skills often downplay emotions and moral issues

Random thought of the day: I taught Conflict Resolution and co-taught Post-Soviet Politics courses. Now i am experiencing the content of both live in UA. How will i teach this to students, when i have a chance?

@JeffreyLax It’s fine! It’s hard to translate what “college professor” means beyond teaching classes to family without college. I was supposed to go to law school and/or run for office or something.

Finally saw my family. Have been properly reminded—in person—that I have not lived up to expectations of impactful work and should rethink all my life choices. Also that I don’t even know how to organize a closet. In retrospect, my whole life was prep for the tenure process.
